Announcing the Winners of our Dollars Behind the Dharma Quiz
Several savvy sangha members will be heading to the Dharma Store to choose a book—their prize for coming closest to knowing KCC’s expenses in our Dollars Behind the Dharma quiz. Congratulations!

Q1. How much does propane cost to heat SCOL for one month in the winter?
WINNER: Carolyn Peck, with an estimate of $2,000 per month
If we consider winter to cover 4 months, the average over the past 6 years is $1,019 per month. However, this year we have already spent $5,041 on propane, so this year’s average is likely to be closer to $2,500 per month!
Q2. What is the annual budget for wages and benefits of KCC staff who care for our sacred facilities, teach the dharma, communicate with us, and organize activities over the course of a year?
WINNER: Jennifer Chang, with an estimate of $200,000.
The budget for 2023 is $201,816.
Q3. How much did it recently cost to pump out the four septic systems at SCOL?
WINNERS: Deborah Edward, with an estimate of $2,000; and Linda Logan, with as estimate of $2,500.
The cost was $2,228.
Q4. Soon we will need to replace the roof over our Portland Center. What is the current bid for this maintenance?
WINNERS: Dora DeCoursey, with an estimate of $20K, closest to the low end of the estimate; and Lotus Romey-Yu, with an estimate of $35K, closest to the high end.
The estimate is for $23K to $34K to replace the roof.
Q5. Our technical support needs are vast. What is the annual cost to meet our technical needs (Zoom, Vimeo, Retreat Guru, Tech Soup, Google Storage, Neon, Sign-Up Genius, Event Calendar, and Acuity Scheduling—not including telephone and internet costs)?
WINNER: Susan Giese, who made an estimate of $10,000.
In 2022 we spent $7,554 on software.
Q6. Sustaining Members are sangha members who pledge ongoing support for KCC, or volunteer regularly, or both. What is the average monthly gift from Sustaining Members?
WINNERS: Jennifer Chang, with an estimate of $65; and Kathleen Benz, with an estimate of $75.
The average Sustaining Member pledge is $70 per month.
