February Climate Corner

February 10, 2026

Did you know that 14-18 percent of global greenhouse emissions come from livestock production, including 32 percent of methane emissions? Add to that the massive deforestation and water consumption that goes toward raising livestock and you find a huge area for improvement for protecting the climate for future generations.

This month, let’s look at reducing our consumption of meat and livestock products.

  • If you eat red meat, consider replacing a meal or two each week with poultry, pork, or fish. These meats cost the environment much less.
  • If your already eat little to no red meat, consider replacing a meal of poultry, fish, or pork with a plantbased protein.
  • If you are vegetarian, look at the dairy products you consume and consume a little less of those.
  • Pay attention to your nutritional needs when making a dietary change. If you are vegan, share your tips for supplementing protein on the KCC listserv or in a future Climate Corner.

Our small behavior changes may not rescue the world all by themselves from the devastating effects of climate change, but living more intentionally and responsibly for the sake of others can have huge effect on our Buddhist practice and mind streams, for the sake of all beings.
