Pride Picnic + Movie
June 23, 2023, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Celebrate Pride Month at KCC!
Join us for a picnic outside under the tent at 6:00pm for potluck and socializing. Please bring a vegan, gluten-free dish to share, and a blanket to sit on. We will have plates and utensils. Liza will be making rainbow cupcakes!
At 7:00pm we will migrate inside to the Meditation Hall to watch a movie together — Gwen will be bringing popcorn! We will start with a joyful and inspiring short film about Kodo Nishimura, the author of This Monk Wears Heels. We will then watch the landmark documentary Paris is Burning, which explores the ball scene of NYC in the ’80s and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. This movie is a bit more gritty as it shares many of the challenges that queer people have faced, and gives a glimpse into cultural events that have shaped queer culture in our country.
If you are not able to join in person, we will be streaming the films on Zoom.
You can also watch them on YouTube through these links: Kodo Nishimura and Paris is Burning.
