Woman Hold My Hand: Calling on Ma Tara in Times of Darkness

November 14, 2020, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Teacher: Lama Rod Owens

In Tibetan Buddhism, Tara is the female Buddha of compassion. Called Drolma in Tibetan, her name means Female Liberator or Mother Liberator. And being the Mother Liberator, Tara is ready at any time to get into our messiness as a personal agent of our liberation. The practice of Tara (and deity practice in general) is a profound strategy that empowers us to hold space for our discomfort and can be a tremendous practice that can wake us up to our own innate wisdom, compassion, love, and fierceness. Moreover, Tara and her commitment to liberating all beings from suffering is one of the reason she embodies compassion.

Compassion lies at the heart of our effectiveness as change makers but how can we define compassion for ourselves? As we call on the Mother to be with us, how does she help us to face the violence we see in ourselves and others? How can Tara inform our spiritual warriorship or inform our allyship? Most importantly, how can we call on the Mother to hold our hands and embrace us? If are overwhelmed by the challenge of living your practice boldly and out loud right now, then join us for these teachings.

From Lama Rod’s website: Considered one of the leaders of the next generation of Dharma teachers, Lama Rod Owens has a blend of formal Buddhist training and life experience that gives him a unique ability to understand, relate and engage with those around him in a way that’s spacious and sincere. His gentle laid-back demeanor and willingness to bare his heart and soul makes others want to do the same. Even when seated in front of a room, he’s next to you, sharing his stories and struggles with an openness vulnerability and gentle humor that makes you genuinely feel good about who you are, with all your flaws and foibles, you’re lovable and deserving of happiness and joy. He invites you into the cross sections of his life as a Black, queer male, born and raised in the South, and heavily influenced by the church and its community.

Through his lens you catch glimpses of your own often conflicting identities. Through it all he weaves in time-tested, traditional Buddhist principles and practices that give listeners real tools for healing and evolution.

Lama Rod Owens was officially recognized by the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism after receiving his teaching authorization from his root teacher the Venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche when he completed the traditional 3-year silent retreat program at Kagyu Thubten Chöling Monastery (KTC) outside of New York City. He is the author of “Love and Rage: The Path of Liberation Through Anger” and is a co-author of “Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love and Liberation.”
