“The only way to liberate oneself from the stages of samsara is to realize egolessness, to realize that the 'I' or ego does not exist.”
– Kalu Rinpoche
The Buddha taught the skandhas to help us understand how this false sense of self arises from the mind. Once we understand this process, we can more effectively apply meditation to free us from clinging to the self as inherently real.
The teachings of the skandhas are a thread running through all three vehicles of Buddhism: Hinayana-Foundational; Mahayana; and Vajrayana. They play a prominent role in the Four Truths of the Noble Ones, in the Heart Sutra, and in the recognition of the true nature of thoughts, emotions and all phenomena.
