SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 5 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator if needed. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-4/2025-12-28/

SUMMARY:Stepping Into Clarity: A New Year's Retreat & Refuge Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Time: 9:00 AM—3:00 PM\nLocation: KCC Urban Center and Zoom\nLeaders: Lama Eric\, Lama Kathleen\, Peter Wood\, Tim Campbell\, Erik Fromme\, Cynthia Irvine\, and David Thornburgh. \nDaily schedule: \nWednesday\, December 31st:\n9-12 Meditation with breaks\n12-1:30 Bring-your-own lunch\n1:30-3:00 Discussion\, meditation\, and aspiration prayers \nThursday\, January 1st:\n9-10:40 Meditation with breaks\n11-12 Refuge ceremony\n12-1:30 Potluck lunch\n1:30-3:00 Discussion\, meditation\, and aspiration prayers \nKCC will continue its long-standing tradition of hosting two days of retreat to purposefully conclude 2025 and intentionally step into 2026. Furthermore\, this marks the beginning of KCC’s 50th anniversary year\, with special events and programs planned to honor our history\, celebrate our community\, and envision together the path ahead. \nFor this retreat\, the current Sunday teachers—Lama Kathleen\, Peter Wood\, Tim Campbell\, Erik Fromme\, Cynthia Irvine and David Thornburgh—will join Lama Eric to lead us in a variety of contemplations\, discussion\, meditations\, and other creative rituals over these two days. We will rejoice in our efforts of the past twelve months\, use the occasion to turn away from unhelpful patterns\, and create meaningful aspirations for the year to come. \nOn the morning of January 1st at 11:00 AM\, there will be a refuge ceremony. You can come to take refuge without joining the two days of retreat; likewise\, you may join the retreat without taking refuge. Formally going for refuge is a declaration of beginning the journey along the Buddhist path. In this brief ceremony\, one goes for refuge in the Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha (the teacher\, the teachings\, and the exalted community of followers) as supports for one’s awakening. A token amount of hair is cut and a Buddhist name is given. You can hear more about taking refuge in the video below. If you would like to take refuge\, please contact Lama Eric. \nCome join us for this annual community ritual to move into the new year with dharma friends! \nYou can join this event in person at KCC or via Zoom. For Zoom\, details on how to join will be included in the confirmation email when you register. On the first day\, New Year’s Eve\, we will all be responsible for our own lunch but will share in a vegetarian and vegan potluck on New Year’s Day. \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/stepping-into-clarity-new-years-retreat-refuge-ceremony-2025-26/

SUMMARY:Shamatha Meditation - Half Day + Potluck
DESCRIPTION:This event will be held in person and over Zoom. \nAt KCC\, the foundation of spiritual training is Shamatha\, a basic sitting meditation that develops stable attention and provides the basis for investigating more subtle aspects of awareness. This practice is the essential underpinning of all other meditation practices. \nWhile our minds are busy and distracted by a myriad of disconnected thoughts\, feelings\, and emotions\, it is not possible to deeply engage the meditation methods that could lead us to the intended result of directly recognizing the nature of mind. Shamatha is a direct method for learning to let the mind rest naturally\, free of our commitment to the tyranny of these distractions. \nLama Eric Triebelhorn provides detailed instructions about the practice of Shamatha on alternating first Sundays from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM\, followed by a potluck lunch. These Half-Day Sits happen in odd-numbered months: January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, and November. \nAll are welcome to attend. \nJoin for Shamatha Meditation Online \nClick the Zoom button below to enter the session.
