SUMMARY:Living the Wisdom of Lojong: A Course in Applied Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:This group offers an opportunity to explore the classic Buddhist teachings known as Lojong\, or “mind training.” These teachings are organized into short\, memorable sayings\, called aphorisms\, that serve as practical reminders for cultivating compassion\, resilience\, and wisdom in everyday life. Whether you are continuing on from 2025’s Mind Training: Foundational Texts Review\, or joining us for the first time\, you’ll be warmly welcomed. \nIn this new cycle\, we’ll place special emphasis on practice and integration. The usual 18‑month curriculum\, led by Tim Campbell\, has been condensed into an 8-month course\, allowing us to focus deeply on the core aphorisms from Points 1 and 2\, which establish the foundations of mind training\, while also engaging with key selections from Points 3–7. \nTogether\, we’ll reflect\, discuss\, and apply these aphorisms\, bringing their wisdom into the challenges and opportunities of modern life. \nLogistics & Schedule \nWhen: Every 2nd and 4th Thursday\nTime: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM\nWhere: Hybrid format—in-person at KCC and on Zoom.\nText: Training In Compassion\, by Norman Fischer \nThe Heart of the Practice \nAs the poet David Whyte reminds us\, “There’s a small opening at the beginning of each day that closes the moment you begin your plans. What you can plan is too small for what you can live.” In that spirit\, we’ll keep our structure focused but flexible\, while staying centered on practice. \nBefore the first class\, we will send out your initial reading assignment. The subsequent bi-weekly rhythm will follow this pattern: \n\n2nd Thursday Class (Practice Initiation): We will come together to explore the questions and insights from the previous two weeks of study. The core focus will be to understand\, “What is the practice?” We will then engage in the active practice of the specific aphorism\, committing ourselves to it for the next two weeks.\nBetween Classes (Two Weeks): Participants engage in the committed\, real-world practice of the aphorism.\n4th Thursday Class (Review & Introduction): We will review our practice efforts\, dialog about any issues or questions that arose\, and refine our engagement. We will then introduce the reading assignment and contemplation theme for the next two-week cycle.\n\nThis practice-focused cycle ensures we are using the aphorisms not just as philosophy\, but as tools for transformation. We invite both continuing participants and newcomers to join us in this journey of practice and discovery and hope to see you there! \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/mind-training-group-living-the-wisdom-of-lojong-3/2026-06-11/

SUMMARY:Guru Yoga Practice Review Session
DESCRIPTION:In person at KCC and over Zoom \nThose who started the Bokar Mahamudra Seminar in September are due to begin the guru yoga practice at the beginning of July. If you are not part of the Mahamudra Program but have done the practice\, you are welcome to join. If you can’t attend\, it will be recorded and put on the website here (where you can find other review videos). \nThe previous three practices of refuge and prostrations\, Vajrasattva\, and the mandala offering have served to lessen the veils that obscure our true nature\, especially those that come from harmful actions of body\, speech\, and mind\, respectively. The practice of guru yoga is about coming into the blessings of the lineage. \nSee some of you there! \nJoining on Zoom \nClick the button below to enter the session at the start of the event. If you join early\, you’ll be placed in a waiting room until the host arrives. \nCLICK HERE FOR ZOOM \nDepending on your Zoom settings\, you may be asked to enter a passcode for this event. \nPasscode: 361886 \nIf you experience any issues accessing the session\, please reach out via email at zoom@kcc.org.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/guru-yoga-practice-review-session/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The schedule for the Children’s Program has been adjusted through September. Please check the KCC calendar for upcoming dates. \nThe KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-06-14/

SUMMARY:Open House Celebrating 50 Years of KCC
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited! Come celebrate 50 years of peace and community at KCC.\nKagyu Changchub Chuling\, a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest’s spiritual landscape\, is proud to announce its 50th anniversary. To honor this “Golden Jubilee\,” the center will host an Open House on June 20 at its Portland location\, inviting the local community to explore the history\, heart\, and practice of Vajrayana Buddhism. \nFounded in 1976 by the world-renowned Tibetan meditation master Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, KCC has evolved from a small group of practitioners meeting in bookstores into a thriving sanctuary for those seeking clarity and wisdom. \nFor more information on KCC’s 50th Year and the history of the center\, click here. \nActivities: \n\nGuided Tours: Explore the sacred artwork and meditation hall of KCC.\nInterest Tables: Learn about weekly meditation classes\, upcoming retreats\, and community service.\nMultimedia Exhibits: Sharing highlights of KCC’s 50-year history and the beauty of its rural retreat center.\nHospitality: Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.\nFamily-Friendly Fun: Interactive activities for all ages to discover the benefits of meditation.\n\n\nA Legacy of Wisdom \nThe 50th anniversary serves as a tribute to the vision of Kalu Rinpoche\, one of the first great lamas to bring the Dharma to the West. Over five decades\, KCC has been anchored by the guidance of resident lamas. \nHaving completed a 3-year retreat that is traditional in the Shangpa Kagyu tradition\, Lama Michael Conklin came to KCC in 1993 and retired in 2019. In 1994\, Eric Triebelhorn came to KCC as a recent college graduate interested in Buddhism. Deeply inspired by Lama Michael and other great lamas of this tradition\, Eric moved to India\, learned Tibetan and completed a traditional 3-year retreat in 2008. After 16 years in India working as a translator\, he returned to Portland and KCC to serve as the current Resident Lama in 2020. \n“This milestone is a bridge between our rich tradition and our future\,” says Executive Director Tim Campbell. “We are celebrating 50 years of being a refuge in Portland\, while also marking the 25th anniversary of our rural retreat center\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling (SCOL)\, in Goldendale\, Washington. Whether you are a long-time practitioner or simply curious about meditation\, our doors are open to everyone.”\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/50th-year-open-house/
