SUMMARY:Dharma Book Club: Everyday Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 7th – Nov. 18th\, In-Person Only at KCC\nWednesdays\, 5:00 – 6:30 PM\n(brown bag your dinner and stay for Chenrezig!) \nEveryday Consciousness and Primordial Awareness\nBy Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche \nFrom Shambhala Publications:\nThis introduction to Buddhist psychology supplies essential instructions for successful meditation practice. Rinpoche presents meditation practices that can powerfully influence and ultimately transform the mind into the purified mind of a Buddha. He clearly describes how consciousnesses operate in everyday perception and how at the time of Buddhahood\, these same consciousnesses express the five primordial wisdoms of the five Buddha families. \nGuidelines to be established at the first meeting. \nInstigators: Cynthia Irvine and Craig Hill. Please note that this is a peer-led book club and discussion circle\, not a formal training or class. \nNote: This book explains the components of the mind and the wisdom energies that can be uncovered through practice. Anybody is welcome\, but some people might prefer a less-cognitive approach to practice. \nPlease email cynthia@kcc.org to RSVP\, or let Cynthia or Craig know in person if you are interested in attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/dharma-book-club-everyday-consciousness/2026-10-07/

SUMMARY:The World is Its Own Magic - A Weekend of Plein Air Painting and Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed. \nThis four-day residential weekend workshop offers techniques in outdoor landscape painting in the high desert forest of the eastern Columbia Gorge. \nThe workshop is designed for artists of varying skill levels who have some experience in drawing and composition; knowledge of color theory is helpful. We will explore color\, composition\, and perspective in new and complex ways allowing artists to unlock fresh avenues of expression and deepen their understanding of visual storytelling. \nHosted at SCOL\, near Goldendale\, Washington\, the schedule will include a guided morning meditation led by KCC teacher Kathleen Benz. We will allow ourselves to become still\, reflective and observant\, and from this mindful stillness we will visit our first painting site where Jef will give guidance on viewing the landscape\, seeing space\, and how it might be arranged in a rectangular canvas\, and then how to manage drawing and colors with mind and heart. \nThe tuition includes lodging\, vegetarian meals and guidance in painting and meditation. Students will need to bring their own painting materials; click here for a class materials list. The SCOL center will provide a cook and facilities staff\, but each student will be asked to complete a daily task of service. \nArtist Jef Gunn\nA Northwest native\, Jef Gunn studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s and held residencies in Barcelona and Paris in the 1980s. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge and helpful insight he is able to draw from each student their own natural way to paint\, while bringing to bear practical instruction through contemporary and historical examples. He has been teaching painting\, including landscape outdoors\, for 30 years. Jef has been a part of the KCC Buddhist community since moving to Portland in 1998. He was part of the team that built the retreat facility at SCOL. \nFrom Jef: \n“Over these years of meditation practice and learning Buddhist views on life\, ethics and kindness\, and care for all beings\, I’ve seen a shift in my work as an artist. Sometimes\, I’ve made this explicit in the forms of the work or in the titles\, with both abstract works and landscapes. \nBringing Buddhist awareness and perhaps a Daoist understanding\, life and living systems open before us. A hill is just a hill\, then it’s a metaphor\, then it’s a hill again. It lifts into sky and drifts into valley. River flows to the sea. Cloud flows. Warm colors and cool colors interact. The blues of the sky change as you look higher. The wind blows through you. You mix colors\, looking at the wide world for clues. You’re interacting with this wild inhabited land\, and you’re responding with irascible paints on a palette. \nJust as with following meditation instructions\, you follow a protocol with the palette\, the mixing knife\, the colors\, the canvas\, the impossible view\, its impossible spaciousness. The mind too is impossibly spacious. You can be present for the whole thing. You might even end up with a painting.” \nVisit Jef’s website here: www.jefgunn.com\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/the-world-is-its-own-magic-a-weekend-of-plein-air-painting-and-mindfulness/

Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-6/

SUMMARY:Community Yin Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Yin Yoga is a slow\, meditative style of yoga that invites stillness and deep release. Rather than flowing quickly from one pose to the next\, Yin encourages you to linger—holding postures for three to seven minutes at a time. This gentle yet profound approach allows the stretch to reach beyond the muscles\, into the body’s deeper connective tissues such as fascia\, joints\, and ligaments. \nUsing supportive props like bolsters\, blankets\, and blocks\, the body is encouraged to fully relax and let go. As tension melts away\, Yin Yoga cultivates greater flexibility\, mobility\, and inner spaciousness. Beyond the physical practice\, Yin invites mindfulness and quiet introspection. It slows the nervous system\, reduces stress\, and nurtures a sense of acceptance and presence—balancing the active\, fiery energies of daily life with calm\, restorative stillness. \nThese sessions are as much about inner reflection as they are about collective harmony\, a space where everyone is welcome to soften and simply be. \nParticipants must be eighteen years of age or older and will be required to sign a waiver before attending. The waiver can be printed out and filled out before arriving\, or we will have some on location. Please bring your own mat\, props\, and personal items. We recommend bringing a water bottle with a secure lid and a towel. This class is offered at no cost; donations are appreciated. \nFacilitated by Darin Milligan\nDarin is an avid rock climber\, boulderer\, mountain biker\, surfer and snowboarder who found stillness in the Yin Yoga practice as a counter balance to all of the Yang activities in his life. He has been practicing Yin for 17 years and teaching for several years. He is a certified Yin Yoga instructor through Yin Yoga Space Studio in Portland\, OR\, and a regularly attending member of the KCC Sangha.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/community-yin-yoga/2026-10-11/

\nPlease email cynthia@kcc.org to RSVP\, or let Cynthia or Craig know in person if you are interested in attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/dharma-book-club-everyday-consciousness/2026-10-14/

SUMMARY:Engaged Buddhism Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Optional informal brown‑bag lunch afterward. \nThere are two wings to our practice – wisdom and compassion. If we only exercise one wing\, we cannot fly. Of course\, to do this skillfully we must keep the wing of wisdom and equanimity-towards-all working simultaneously. \nThis session\, we’ll explore how the Mandala of Socially Engaged Buddhism can serve as a framework for Engaged Buddhism. We’ll reflect on what it means to engage in these ways toward ourselves\, toward others\, within the organizational structures we participate in\, and as principles that shape our wider societal involvement. How do these levels of engagement support one another and inter‑relate? \nThe framework we’ll be drawing from is outlined in the document Cynthia shared last session. \nAs always\, there will be plenty of space for personal check‑ins and for sharing what is arising in each of our own areas of engagement. \nQuestions?
He is a certified Yin Yoga instructor through Yin Yoga Space Studio in Portland\, OR\, and a regularly attending member of the KCC Sangha.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/community-yin-yoga/2026-10-18/
