DESCRIPTION:KCC Book Group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month.\n\n9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at KCC Portland Center (No Zoom)\n\nEveryone is welcome\nContact Cynthia@kcc.org if you have questions or would like to attend.\n\n\nMeets in person at the Portland Center to discuss the book Joyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living by Dr. Kamilah Majied.\n\n\n\nBuddhist practices for joy and justice\nJoyfully Just: Black Wisdom and Buddhist Insights for Liberated Living \nWhen the world feels cracked open\, it becomes apparent that we take false refuge regularly. Working with a book grounded in Buddhist theory and practice allows us to find true refuge. \n“The goal of this book is simple – to reclaim joy by using meditative practices to be just toward ourselves and the world around us…As we begin to see and face…all that we could not see and face before\, we become more free and thus more joyful. In Buddhism\, emancipation from delusion is itself enlightenment…Enlightenment comes from seeing the truth.” \n“I define meditative…practices as the activities we engage in to bring ourselves to the present moment in a way that reflects an embodied and integrated experience of our own minds\, hearts\, and bodies. True mindful or contemplative practice strengthens our compassion…” \n“Pause and look at the suffering that injustice has caused…in that pause we can experience the joy of clarity\, which is a precursor to the joy of healing… Our spirits\, bodies and minds need to be buoyant to navigate the unceasing waves…” \n“Community is one of our biggest resources!” \nWe meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month\, from 9:30 till 11:00. SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 5 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator if needed. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group.
