SUMMARY:Green Tara Practice Review
DESCRIPTION:At KCC and via Zoom \nFollowing up on Ven. Lama Tsang Tsing offering the Green Tara empowerment at KCC on Saturday\, July 11th\, Lama Eric will offer a review of the practice on Saturday\, July 18th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. An outline of the sadhana (practice text) will be provided\, and texts will be available for purchase. \nGreen Tara is a Vajrayana practice that involves visualization and mantra recitation to approach what Green Tara embodies—the activity of all the Buddhas. This particular version is constructed around the recitation of the famed Twenty-One Praises to Tara. This is a kriya-yoga practice where we principally imagine Green Tara before us\, present offerings\, and recite these well-known praises. The Twenty-One Praises are part of many esteemed teachers’ daily practice\, including Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche\, Khenchen Rinpoche\, and many others. \nWe will do the practice as a group\, in English\, pausing at each section break for instruction and clarification. The session will be recorded\, and the video will be made available to all who attend. In addition\, you will be provided access to an online folder with many other helpful resources\, such as videos of the mudras\, recordings of practice sessions\, images\, and more. \nGreen Tara is a regular practice at KCC. It is held on the second\, third\, fourth\, and fifth (when applicable) Monday mornings of the month at 7:00 am\, over Zoom only. SUMMARY:Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi Empowerments with Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing
DESCRIPTION:Empowerment Opportunities Abound!\nRegistration for this event is closed. \nWe are pleased to announce that Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing has accepted our invitation to grant three empowerments at KCC as part of our yearlong celebration of our dharma center’s 50th anniversary. He will be bestowing the three initiations that are most essential to KCC’s programming: Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi. \nEmpowerment is a key feature of Vajrayana Buddhism and can be understood as a formal initiation for a particular yidam practice. A yidam is a manifestation of awakened mind—wisdom\, compassion\, and ability—in form. There is a practice for each yidam where we imagine that yidam (often regarding ourselves in that form) and recite a mantra. By imagining our being manifested as awakened body\, speech\, and mind\, these types of meditation are said to hasten our awakening. \nVajrasattva is associated with purification and is part of the ngondro\, or preliminary\, practices\, of the Mahamudra tradition. Green Tara is considered the embodiment of the activity of all the buddhas\, and Chenrezi is seen as an emanation of the compassion of all the buddhas. Even if you do not plan to begin such practices right away\, it is considered very positive to take such empowerments. By receiving empowerments\, auspicious seeds are planted in our being and these rituals are said to have a “ripening effect” on our spiritual path to awakening. We are thus encouraged to take such empowerments again and again. \nThe only prerequisite is to first take the vow of refuge\, which is a formal way to enter the Buddhist path. This will be offered before each initiation. There are no mandatory practice commitments for receiving any of these. \nLama Tsang Tsing is the resident lama of our sister center\, Kagyu Dakshang Chuling in Eugene\, Oregon\, and is a highly respected monk and practitioner. Lama Tsang Tsing spent some of his youth at Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and later did the second three-year retreat at Sonada under Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life and Activity of Lama Michael Conklin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two hours of sharing and appreciation followed by a reception with refreshments and more memories.\nIn 1974\, a thirty-year-old Michael Conklin humored his elder friend\, Hugh O’Neil\, and agreed to attend a teaching by some old Tibetan Buddhist lama. That lama was Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, and that seemingly chance encounter deeply influenced the life of the relatively young Michael Conklin\, and perhaps\, the lives of many of you reading this. In the presence of that wizened and gentle old lama\, an unsuspecting Michael had an experience that radically altered the trajectory of his life. From that first encounter\, he knew that things would never be the same. \nMichael became part of the small but committed group of students in San Francisco who began looking for a physical space where Kalu Rinpoche’s activity might be nurtured and allowed to flourish. A first home for the dharma center was found\, and so began Kagyu Droden Kunchab\, Kalu Rinpoche’s first center in the States. Michael served as president of the board of directors from its inception until\, under the direction and inspiration of Kalu Rinpoche\, Lama Lodu organized a three-year retreat in Marcola\, Oregon. Michael entered the three-year retreat in 1986—led by Lama Tsang Tsing\, now of Eugene\, Oregon—and it concluded in 1989. \nAfter the retreat\, Lama Michael and Tara went on a pilgrimage to the Indian subcontinent\, where Lama Michael had served in the Peace Corps earlier in his life. Upon returning to San Francisco\, he worked in the corporate world for a bit—no doubt bringing a quizzical presence and some subversive energy to the culture of Chevron. Sanje Elliot\, one of the early students who met Kalu Rinpoche before his visits to North America\, had recently become president of Kagyu Changchub Chuling in Portland following the retirement of its previous teacher\, Lama Thinley Dupa. Sanje was an old friend of Lama Michael’s from the early days in San Francisco and suggested inviting him and Tara to meet the small community in Portland. \nLeaping to the unknown\, they moved to Portland\, and Lama Michael began teaching at KCC. His relaxed presence\, authenticity\, humor\, and insightfulness—all seasoned with just the right amount of healthy cynicism—created an open and welcoming space which began to fill with more and more hungry seekers. Students came; the center flourished; and Lama Michael began to impact the life trajectory of many of his own students. \nIf you are one of these individuals who was deeply moved by Lama Michael\, come and join us for a ceremony of remembrance and appreciation. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Lama Karma Yeshe Chödrön of Prajna Fire as a guest teacher this week\, who will be teaching on moving from complexity to intimacy with Yidam practice. \nWith its richness of imagery and detail\, Yidam practice can appear mysterious and otherworldly — at once alluring and daunting. This talk offers a shift of perspective\, viewing that very complexity as an invitation to intimacy with our own direct experience. When we engage imagery\, mantra\, and symbolism as an array of instruments at our disposal\, yidam practice becomes a vivid exploration of mind’s sacred creativity\, supporting our path to embodying the true nature of mind. \nPlease join us for a potluck at the noon break! \nLama Karma Yeshe Chödrön is a scholar\, teacher\, and translator in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism\, and a long-term student of Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche. Before studying Buddhism\, she completed graduate degrees in biology and law\, and worked as a litigator in Miami and Silicon Valley. \nSince 2005\, she has taught and translated Dharma texts and oral teachings from Tibetan to English for the Rigpe Dorje Institute for International Students at Pullahari Monastery in Nepal. Yeshe successfully completed the traditional Kagyu lineage three-year cloistered retreat at Vajra Vidya Retreat Center in Crestone\, Colorado in 2016\, under the auspices of Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche. She then co-founded Prajna Fire\, an online global community aimed at sharing traditional methods for transmitting experiential understanding of Buddhadharma with Western students. Her writings have appeared in Lion’s Roar\, Buddhadharma\, and Tricycle. She is co-host of the Prajna Sparks podcast and two seasons of Opening Dharma Access: Listening to BIPOC teachers podcast. \nThis event is offered freely\, in the spirit of generosity.
