SUMMARY:Bokar Mahamudra Seminar 2026
DESCRIPTION:In-person at SCOL and over Zoom\nRegistration for In-Person is closed. \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche began this program for the benefit of modern practitioners who have busy lives but also wish to travel the path to awakening. The curriculum progresses through instruction on shamatha in year one\, vipashyana in year two\, and the union of these two in year three. This year\, we are pleased that Lama Sonam Dargye and Lama Kathleen will also provide support for the retreat. \nThe core of the program is establishing a commitment to a daily practice\, and this has proven very beneficial to assist many in cultivating a stable meditation practice. In the first year of the program\, there is a different shamatha technique for each day of the week\, but with a progression of resting more and more in open awareness meditation. One also engages in a brief daily contemplation on one of the four thoughts that turn the mind to dharma which hone our motivation or a loving-kindness and compassion practice called taking and sending (or tonglen) which further opens our hearts. Practitioners are further encouraged to do 100\,000 Chenrezi mantras—om mani padme hum—over the course of the year. \nIn the second year of the program\, participants begin working with vipashyana\, where one begins to investigate the nature of this mind that is resting in shamatha. This is the gateway to insight into the nature of mind. And for the third year\, one begins instruction on joining these two techniques of stable resting and insight. \nTraditionally\, the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition are also done. These meditations remove obstacles and create positive conditions that allow practitioners to engage more deeply in shamatha and vipashyana. These include refuge and prostrations\, the one hundred-syllable mantra of Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. These take about 40 minutes each day\, but for those who are not drawn to these\, this time can be spent with more shamatha or vipashyana. For those interested\, one can aspire to 5\,000 or 10\,000 of each of these practices per quarter. \nWho Should Attend\nPractitioners at all levels are welcome to join the seminar. It is an especially skillful program for people wishing to create a meaningful daily meditation practice in the mahamudra tradition. This retreat is held as a shared practice container\, and we ask that everyone who registers plan to be present for all sessions. Recordings will be available as a support for those attending live\, but not as an alternative way to participate. In addition\, we ask that those who join be willing to take on the accompanying practice commitments for one year. Participants should have already received the vow of refuge—the formal act of becoming Buddhist—or be ready to take it. The refuge vow will be offered at the seminar. \nThe Seminar\nThe day will begin with calm abiding meditation and end with the Chenrezi practice. There will be detailed instruction for all of the practices to be done over the course of the year and plenty of time for questions and discussion. With Lama Sonam and Lama Kathleen present this year\, we will have more time for special breakout groups for the various levels of practice. The daily schedule will be fairly full but will also allow for ample stretch breaks and time for rest and reflection. This retreat will be held in partial silence\, with silence maintained each morning until lunch. In addition\, several days will be held in full silence to help create a supportive atmosphere for practice. \nThe Founder and Teachers of the Program \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche\nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche (1940-2004) was a renowned master of the Karma Kagyu lineage and the principal lineage holder of Shangpa Kagyu\, which he inherited from his root guru\, Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. Drawing from a lifetime of study\, intensive meditation\, and many years of experience as a retreat master\, Bokar Rinpoche first offered this program in 1992. \nKhenchen Lodrö Donyö Rinpoche\nKhenchen Rinpoche was nearly inseparable from Bokar Rinpcohe for his whole life and assisted him at all of the seminars. Since the passing of Bokar Rinpoche\, Khenchen Rinpoche has assumed responsibility for the program and skillfully nurtured it. \nLama Eric met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 when he offered the seminar in Portland. He later did retreat in India and was asked to begin sharing these teachings in 2018. Lama Eric has served as KCC’s Resident Lama since January 2020. \nLama Sonam Dargye was a dharma brother of Lama Michael\, KCC’s former Resident Lama\, and they participated in the same three-year retreat. He was one of the early westerners to participate in Bokar Rinpoche’s program and assists at our sister dharma center in Eugene\, OR. \nLama Kathleen also met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 and practiced under the seminar’s guidance for well over a decade before her three-year retreat at SCOL under Lama Michael and Lama Tara. \nTo learn more about the history of the Mahamudra Seminar\, click here. \nBook Recommendations \nThe Torch of True Meaning by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye\nA classic guide to the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition which include refuge and prostrations\, Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. Paper copies of the book and a free ebook are both available. \nTurning Confusion into Clarity by Mingyur Rinpoche\nThis is a contemporary presentation on these preliminary practices which is very useful to help you understand more about the practices. It also offers many techniques that one can use to keep one’s engagement with these meditations fresh. \nOcean of Definitive Meaning by Thrangu Rinpoche\nTranscripts of Rinpoche’s teaching on the 9th Karmapa’s text of the same title. Wonderful descriptions of the preliminary and main practices of shamatha and vipashyana in here. \nOcean of Certainty by Traleg Kyabgon\nTraleg Rinpoche’s oral translation/teachings on the 9th Karmapa’s Ocean of Definitive Meaning. Very helpful for the shamatha and vipashyana teachings of the seminar. \n\nRetreat Schedule \nThe retreat opens on Friday\, Sept 11\, with dinner and an evening session and ends on Saturday\, Sept 19\, with a closing session and breakfast in the morning. Lodging and meals are included for those attending in person. SUMMARY:Ser Chö Ösel Ling 25th Anniversary Gathering
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED \nThis year marks a remarkable milestone: 25 years of SCOL and 50 years of KCC. To honor this shared journey\, we’ll gather on the retreat land to celebrate all that has unfolded so far and to look ahead with enthusiasm to the retreats and possibilities yet to come. \nThis gathering will bring together friends\, neighbors\, and long‑time supporters of the retreat center\, many of whom played key roles in its founding\, maintenance\, and growth. The celebration will include a vegetarian lunch offered by SCOL\, opportunities to explore the land\, interest tables\, a history presentation\, information about the dharma and Buddhist retreat\, nature walks\, and activities for children. \nA Brief History of SCOL \nIn 2001\, KCC purchased the land which previously served as a horse ranch and lies on the ancestral lands of the Rock Creek Band of the Klickitat people. At that time\, the 240 acres held a modest two‑bedroom house\, a large barn\, corral fencing beside a heart‑shaped meadow\, a steady creek\, and a recovering forest of pine\, oak\, and fir. Since then\, development of a long‑term retreat center has continued\, including two cloistered retreat wings and several staff buildings. \nOver the years\, SCOL has hosted a one‑year retreat\, a three‑year retreat\, and many shorter retreats and gatherings. Each year we offer guided retreats\, opportunities for personal practice\, and themed weekends and workshops. All the while\, SCOL remains dedicated to nurturing and revitalizing the land so it may support the flora\, fauna\, and all who visit. \nTo learn more about the history of SCOL\, click here. \nStaying for the Weekend \nSangha members are invited to stay Friday night\, Saturday night\, or both. The main activities will be held between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday. We currently have capacity to host 35 people in cabins. Single cabins will not be available for this event\, only ones with double occupancy. Ample camping spaces will also be available. \nThere is no cost to stay; however\, we warmly encourage you to donate or become a sustaining supporter to help ensure dharma teachings remain available for many years to come! We are looking for volunteers for all aspects of this event. If you would like to volunteer to help\, please select the volunteer option on the registration form. \nBecause parking is limited\, we ask participants to carpool whenever possible. A carpool coordination system has been set up\, and you will receive an email with details after registering. \nPlease register by September 14\, even if you’re only attending on Saturday\, and include the number of people in your group. Even if you do not plan to stay overnight\, we need you to register if you intend to join us for the celebration. As lunch will be provided\, accurate numbers are essential for planning. You will receive additional information upon registration. \n  \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/ser-cho-osel-ling-25th-anniversary-gathering/

SUMMARY:Meeting to Discuss One-Year Retreat at SCOL
DESCRIPTION:Long retreat provides an opportunity for focused meditation practice on the Buddhist path. Inspired by Bokar Rinpoche\, with the vision of Lama Michael Conklin and the work of many others\, KCC created Ser Chö Ösel Ling (SCOL) as a place for long retreat. We conducted a one-year retreat in 2013\, and a three-year retreat beginning in 2015. Since then\, KCC has conducted many shorter retreats at SCOL to benefit the sangha and all beings. \nKCC would like to again offer the opportunity for long-term retreat at SCOL. We are now gauging interest for a retreat that would begin in 2028. Initial estimates place the cost at around $25K for a year. Determining the true cost depends on factors including how many retreatants we have. \nIf we have a suitable number of people to fill the one year retreat\, wonderful! If there are spaces remaining\, we would open up the opportunity to do six months. And if there is still space\, a three-month stint is possible.  \nAre you interested in long retreat? Do you have the conditions that make long retreat in 2028 feasible for you? \nIf you would like to hear more about joining a three\, six\, or twelve month retreat at SCOL\, please join our meeting in-person at KCC and via Zoom on Sunday\, September 27th at 1:00pm. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN ON ZOOM \n  \nMeeting ID: 891 4749 6014\nPasscode: 181464\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/meeting-to-discuss-one-year-retreat-at-scol/
