SUMMARY:Personal Practice Retreat
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to be able to once again host our annual one-month opportunity for personal retreat at Ser Chö Ösel Ling\, our retreat land in Goldendale\, WA. Some may sign up for the entire month and others will come for stays ranging from a weekend to three weeks. Each week of retreat will begin on a Friday from February 20 until March 20\, 2026. Time periods available are for 1-week\, 2-weeks\, 3-weeks\, 4-weeks and weekends\, all beginning on a Friday. \nDuring the personal retreat time\, all retreatants keep the same schedule and practice on their own in their rooms or in one of the meditation halls. Everyone gathers for meals and in the evening after dinner for a short meditation and the recitation of aspiration prayers or inspirational songs. All of the meals will be provided. \nThe month of personal retreat is an excellent way to deepen one’s practice in the support of other community members. Being able to devote more time to meditation away from our habitually busy environs can be very inspiring and nurturing. Each day will have periods of silence\, and silence will also be observed each week for a number of days. \nBefore engaging in personal retreat\, it is recommended that participants have previous experience that includes at least some facilitated group retreat and perhaps some individual retreat. The most skillful approach to personal retreat is to begin with a weekend and gradually increase the length of one’s stay. Beginning with a retreat that is beyond one’s current capacity can undermine the potential benefit of one’s stay and unnecessarily dampen enthusiasm for future retreat. \nRegardless of experience\, each participant will create an individualized practice plan – either by themselves or in consultation with an advisor. If you are new to personal retreat with KCC\, we request that you speak with an advisor about creating an outline for your retreat in order to facilitate a meaningful experience. To design a retreat plan\, you can reach out to Lama Eric by making an appointment here\, or to Lama Kathleen by email at kdabenz@gmail.com. \nSample Schedule \nAM\n6:00-7:20      Practice Session\n7:30-9:00      Breakfast\n9:00-10:30    Practice Session\n10:30-11:00   Tea Break\n11:00-12:00   Practice Session \nPM\n12:10-2:00     Lunch\n2:00-3:30      Practice Session\n3:30-4:00      Tea Break\n4:00-5:15       Practice Session\n5:30-6:45      Dinner\n6:45-7:30      Group Practice \nArrival Time on Fridays: Between 2 PM and 4 PM\nDeparture Time on Last Day of your Retreat Period: After breakfast and before 10:00 AM \nMeals and Chores\nThree vegetarian meals will be served daily. Retreatants are expected to contribute up to one hour per day toward chores that will be done during the three meal breaks. \nRegistration\nThe number of participants for this retreat will be limited to 16 participants in single occupancy cabins only\, allowing for a spacious environment to support this longer retreat. Registration will be open for retreats of a week or longer until February 15th; registration for weekends will stay open throughout. \nPricing \n1 week: $600\nWeekend: $270 \nIncludes single cabin and 3 meals per day. \n  \nREGISTER FOR 1 WEEKREGISTER FOR A WEEKEND \n  \nNote: To support the staff and the retreat container for all retreatants\, each retreat period begins on a Friday. If there are extenuating circumstances and the only way you could attend would be to come on different dates\, you may contact scol.retreats@kcc.org with details about your circumstances. Requests will be reviewed in consultation with Lama Eric and approved on a case-by-case basis. \nFinancial Assistance: Financial Assistance (up to 50% of the retreat cost) may be available for individuals with financial constraints. The amount of FA available depends entirely on donations to the Financial Assistance Fund. For those who can afford it\, please consider contributing to the Financial Assistance Fund so that others who are less financially fortunate are able to attend KCC retreats. \nTo apply for Financial Assistance\, contact the Financial Assistance Team at KCC-FA@kcc.org with details of your request. After you have received confirmation\, then register for the retreat. For further details\, read the KCC Financial Assistance Policy here. \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/personal-practice-retreat/

SUMMARY:Children's Program and Art Show
DESCRIPTION:This week only: The last few months\, the children’s program has been practicing mindfulness through art\, and the kids will have some of their work on display. Please join us in celebrating the Sanga’s youngest artists! \nThe KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-and-art-show/

SUMMARY:The Essence of Meditation: Letting Go Into Being
DESCRIPTION:In-person and over Zoom \nNever done a meditation retreat before?\nFeel like you need a sanity break?\nNeed some inspiration for your meditation? \nThis weekend retreat—from Friday evening till Monday lunch—can serve any of these purposes and more. So much of our unease\, self-criticism\, despondency\, or stress is caused by thoughts and patterns of thinking that we are often barely aware of. Meditation is about becoming increasingly familiar with the essence of our being—that which lies beneath all fleeting experiences and is a source of inherent well-being. \nJust extracting ourselves from the busyness of our daily lives to spend contemplative time at our spacious\, quiet\, and nurturing retreat land for a weekend does us good. Combine that with gentle and repeated opportunities to become more familiar with the essence of our being through guided meditation and we have something even more meaningful! This retreat is an opportunity to engage more deeply in this process and can equally serve as an introduction to or as an infusion of inspiration for this path of discovery. \nWhat can you expect to gain from this weekend? \n\nAn experiential understanding of the benefits of meditation through guided sessions\, with plenty of stretch breaks\nThe opportunity to experiment with several types of meditation\, some related to developing spacious calm and some focused on opening the heart\nParticipation in question and discussion periods to learn from the teacher and peers\nConfidence in how to bring a regular meditation practice into your life.\n\nSample Schedule \nAM\n6:30-7:30 Meditation\n7:30-9:00 Breakfast Break\n9:00-10:30 Meditation and Teaching\n10:30-11:00 Tea Break\n11:00-12:00 Meditation \nPM\n12:00-2:30 Lunch Break\n2:30-4:00 Meditation and Discussion\n4:00-4:30 Tea Break\n4:30-5:30 Meditation\n5:30-7:00 Dinner Break\n7:00-7:45 Aspiration Prayers and Inspirational Song \nVegetarian meals will be provided. The meal breaks will be spacious. And we will all perform assigned tasks to contribute to the retreat experience. \nLooking forward to being with you there! \nBy signing up you are agreeing to participate in the retreat from beginning to end. This is important to create a cohesive and supportive environment for all. \n  \nREGISTER FOR IN-PERSON \n ZOOM REGISTRATION  \n  \nFinancial Assistance: Financial Assistance (up to 50% of the retreat cost) may be available for individuals with financial constraints. The amount of FA available depends entirely on donations to the Financial Assistance Fund. SUMMARY:SCOL Spring Work Party
DESCRIPTION:SCOL hosts work parties several times a year to serve together on major projects. These are opportunities to meet in a more informal setting\, socialize\, and complete tasks needed to operate our retreat facility and a property of this size. \nThis May’s work party will focus on fire prevention and preparedness. We will use tools such as weedwhackers\, leaf blowers\, and pole saws to get ready for what may be a dangerous fire season due to such a mild winter. SCOL staff and our skilled volunteer\, Bruce Niemann\, will head up training and projects around the main retreat buildings. There are also less physical tasks appropriate for different skills and abilities. All are welcome. \nThe work will start at 10:00am on Saturday May 2\, including a vegetarian lunch at noon provided by SCOL\, then a second work session in the afternoon from 2:00-4:00. As always\, lodging is free\, and you are welcome to come on Friday and stay through Sunday. Cabins are first-come-first-served. We will not have a cook\, so plan to bring your own food other than Saturday lunch. SUMMARY:Milarepa Guru Yoga and Feast Honoring Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche
DESCRIPTION:Followed by a Potluck Lunch\nIn-person and via Zoom \nIn KCC’s 50th anniversary year\, we will honor our connection to both the dharma center’s founder\, Kalu Rinpoche\, and his successor\, Bokar Rinpoche\, by practicing Milarepa’s Guru Yoga and Feast in their honor. This date falls between the anniversary of the passing of the previous Kalu Rinpoche (May 10\, 1989) and the birthday of the reincarnation of Bokar Rinpoche (April 25\, 2006). You needn’t have any empowerment nor previous experience with the practice to attend. \nA guru yoga is a practice where we imagine a prominent master of the lineage before us\, in this case Milarepa\, and that this being is also the essence of our other teachers and inspirations\, such as Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. We then chant a text\, making offerings and supplications to these masters. \nTowards the end of the ritual\, we will chant a few songs composed by Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche and will continue with a shared “feast”— a small bit of consecrated food and drink which we consume as part of the practice. At the end\, we receive blessing and inspiration from Milarepa\, mix our mind with the awakened mind of these masters\, rest for a bit\, and conclude with an aspiration prayer. At the conclusion of this\, we will share in a potluck lunch which will begin around 12:00pm. \nThe text will be displayed on the screen in the meditation hall and on the Zoom screen. The food and drink for the ritual will be provided—no need to bring offerings for this. If you would like to contribute to the event\, you can donate here. \nJoin Online \nClick the Zoom button below to enter the session (this is the same link as for Sunday Shamatha Meditation). If you join early\, you’ll be placed in a waiting room until the session begins. \nJOIN ON ZOOM \nDepending on your Zoom settings\, you may be asked to enter a passcode for this event. \nPasscode: 798448 \nIf you experience any issues accessing the session\, please reach out via email at zoom@kcc.org.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/milarepa-guru-yoga-and-feast-honoring-kalu-rinpoche-and-bokar-rinpoche/

SUMMARY:Vipashyana: Exploring the Nature of Being
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed. \nIn the wisdom tradition of Mahamudra\, the principal meditation practices are shamatha and vipashyana. With the mind resting at ease through shamatha (or calm abiding meditation)\, we gain some respite from the seemingly constant barrage of thoughts and emotions\, which when not understood\, serve to veil the nature of our being. But shamatha practice is not sufficient to eradicate our confusion. It is vipashyana meditation that leads to liberating insight into the nature of our being and the nature of our experiences of thoughts\, emotions\, and perceptions. \nVipashyana practice is an analytical approach to meditation\, but not in an ordinary intellectual sense. As Traleg Rinpoche says\, these investigations are “designed to cut through to the very heart of things—to pave the way for a direct insight into the very nature of ultimate reality itself… The Mahamudra teachings counsel that we cannot understand the nature of reality without understanding the nature of the mind\, and this understanding is the whole purpose of vipashyana meditation.” \nIn general\, before beginning vipashyana practice\, a decent foundation of shamatha meditation is important. If you are new to vipashyana practice\, it is suggested that you have at least a year of relatively consistent shamatha practice experience. Otherwise\, it may prove difficult to maintain mindfulness and awareness during the insight investigations. If you are not sure if the retreat is right for you\, contact Lama Eric. \nThis retreat is held as a shared practice container\, and we ask that everyone who registers\, whether attending in person or on Zoom\, plan to be present for all sessions. Recordings will be available as a reference for those who attend live\, but not as an alternative way to take part. Please note: this retreat involves daily periods of silence. \nBook References \nIn Mind at Ease\, Traleg Kyabgon speaks clearly and eloquently about vipashyana meditation and the nature of mind. It also contains wonderful teachings on shamatha practice. For the investigations themselves\, we will follow Dakpo Tashi Namgyal’s Clarifying the Natural State and Thrangu Rinpoche’s commentary on that text\, Crystal Clear. You needn’t necessarily have any of these to participate\, but they would be beneficial reference materials. \nRetreat Schedule  \nThe retreat opens on Friday\, May 8 with dinner and an evening session and ends on Friday\, May 15 with a closing session and breakfast in the morning. For retreat days\, the schedule will be as follows: \nAM\n6:30 – 7:30 am             Group meditation\n7:30 – 9:00 am             Breakfast break\n9:00 – 10:30 am           Teaching and meditation\n10:30 – 11:00 am         Tea break\n11:00 – 12:00 pm         Self-guided practice \nPM\n12:00 – 2:30 pm           Lunch break\n2:30 – 4:00 pm            Meditation and discussion\n4:00 – 4:30 pm            Tea break\n4:30 – 5:30 pm            Teaching and meditation\n5:30 – 7:00 pm            Dinner break\n7:00 – 7:45pm             Evening chanting and prayers \nThe retreat will be held at Ser Chö Ösel Ling\, our retreat land in Goldendale\, WA\, and is also offered online via Zoom. The online option is available on a sliding scale so that anyone for whom travel or cost is a barrier can still fully participate. For in-person retreat\, lodging and three vegetarian meals a day are included. \n  \nRegistration for this event is closed. \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/vipashyana-exploring-the-nature-of-being/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The schedule for the Children’s Program has been adjusted through September. Please check the KCC calendar for upcoming dates. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-05-10/

Come celebrate 50 years of peace and community at KCC.\nKagyu Changchub Chuling\, a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest’s spiritual landscape\, is proud to announce its 50th anniversary. To honor this “Golden Jubilee\,” the center will host an Open House on June 20 at its Portland location\, inviting the local community to explore the history\, heart\, and practice of Vajrayana Buddhism. \nFounded in 1976 by the world-renowned Tibetan meditation master Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, KCC has evolved from a small group of practitioners meeting in bookstores into a thriving sanctuary for those seeking clarity and wisdom. \nFor more information on KCC’s 50th Year and the history of the center\, click here. \nActivities: \n\nGuided Tours: Explore the sacred artwork and meditation hall of KCC.\nInterest Tables: Learn about weekly meditation classes\, upcoming retreats\, and community service.\nMultimedia Exhibits: Sharing highlights of KCC’s 50-year history and the beauty of its rural retreat center.\nHospitality: Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.\nFamily-Friendly Fun: Interactive activities for all ages to discover the benefits of meditation.\n\n\nA Legacy of Wisdom \nThe 50th anniversary serves as a tribute to the vision of Kalu Rinpoche\, one of the first great lamas to bring the Dharma to the West. Over five decades\, KCC has been anchored by the guidance of resident lamas. \nHaving completed a 3-year retreat that is traditional in the Shangpa Kagyu tradition\, Lama Michael Conklin came to KCC in 1993 and retired in 2019. In 1994\, Eric Triebelhorn came to KCC as a recent college graduate interested in Buddhism. Deeply inspired by Lama Michael and other great lamas of this tradition\, Eric moved to India\, learned Tibetan and completed a traditional 3-year retreat in 2008. After 16 years in India working as a translator\, he returned to Portland and KCC to serve as the current Resident Lama in 2020. \n“This milestone is a bridge between our rich tradition and our future\,” says Executive Director Tim Campbell. “We are celebrating 50 years of being a refuge in Portland\, while also marking the 25th anniversary of our rural retreat center\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling (SCOL)\, in Goldendale\, Washington. Whether you are a long-time practitioner or simply curious about meditation\, our doors are open to everyone.”\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/50th-year-open-house/

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life and Activity of Lama Michael Conklin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two hours of sharing and appreciation followed by a reception with refreshments and more memories.\nIn 1974\, a thirty-year-old Michael Conklin humored his elder friend\, Hugh O’Neil\, and agreed to attend a teaching by some old Tibetan Buddhist lama. That lama was Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, and that seemingly chance encounter deeply influenced the life of the relatively young Michael Conklin\, and perhaps\, the lives of many of you reading this. In the presence of that wizened and gentle old lama\, an unsuspecting Michael had an experience that radically altered the trajectory of his life. From that first encounter\, he knew that things would never be the same. \nMichael became part of the small but committed group of students in San Francisco who began looking for a physical space where Kalu Rinpoche’s activity might be nurtured and allowed to flourish. A first home for the dharma center was found\, and so began Kagyu Droden Kunchab\, Kalu Rinpoche’s first center in the States. Michael served as president of the board of directors from its inception until\, under the direction and inspiration of Kalu Rinpoche\, Lama Lodu organized a three-year retreat in Marcola\, Oregon. Michael entered the three-year retreat in 1986—led by Lama Tsang Tsing\, now of Eugene\, Oregon—and it concluded in 1989. \nAfter the retreat\, Lama Michael and Tara went on a pilgrimage to the Indian subcontinent\, where Lama Michael had served in the Peace Corps earlier in his life. Upon returning to San Francisco\, he worked in the corporate world for a bit—no doubt bringing a quizzical presence and some subversive energy to the culture of Chevron. Sanje Elliot\, one of the early students who met Kalu Rinpoche before his visits to North America\, had recently become president of Kagyu Changchub Chuling in Portland following the retirement of its previous teacher\, Lama Thinley Dupa. Sanje was an old friend of Lama Michael’s from the early days in San Francisco and suggested inviting him and Tara to meet the small community in Portland. \nLeaping to the unknown\, they moved to Portland\, and Lama Michael began teaching at KCC. His relaxed presence\, authenticity\, humor\, and insightfulness—all seasoned with just the right amount of healthy cynicism—created an open and welcoming space which began to fill with more and more hungry seekers. Students came; the center flourished; and Lama Michael began to impact the life trajectory of many of his own students. \nIf you are one of these individuals who was deeply moved by Lama Michael\, come and join us for a ceremony of remembrance and appreciation. The vast majority of the time will be spent listening to reflections on Lama Michael from the attendees. Please consider what you might say beforehand and keep your sharing to about a minute to allow for as many people to speak as possible. If you would like to submit something in writing\, you can use this form. \nThe responses can be viewed by all here. \nCome if you knew Lama Michael; come if you didn’t; come if you haven’t visited KCC in a while; and come if it’s your new home!\nJoin Online \nClick the Zoom button below to enter the session. If you join early\, you’ll be placed in a waiting room until the session begins. \nDepending on your Zoom settings\, you may be asked to enter a passcode for this event. \nPasscode: 798448 \nIf you experience any issues accessing the session\, please reach out via email at zoom@kcc.org. \n  \nJOIN ON ZOOM \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/celebrating-the-life-and-activity-of-lama-michael-conklin/

SUMMARY:Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi Empowerments with Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing
DESCRIPTION:Empowerment Opportunities Abound!\nRegistration for this event is closed. \nWe are pleased to announce that Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing has accepted our invitation to grant three empowerments at KCC as part of our yearlong celebration of our dharma center’s 50th anniversary. He will be bestowing the three initiations that are most essential to KCC’s programming: Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi. \nEmpowerment is a key feature of Vajrayana Buddhism and can be understood as a formal initiation for a particular yidam practice. A yidam is a manifestation of awakened mind—wisdom\, compassion\, and ability—in form. There is a practice for each yidam where we imagine that yidam (often regarding ourselves in that form) and recite a mantra. By imagining our being manifested as awakened body\, speech\, and mind\, these types of meditation are said to hasten our awakening. \nVajrasattva is associated with purification and is part of the ngondro\, or preliminary\, practices\, of the Mahamudra tradition. Green Tara is considered the embodiment of the activity of all the buddhas\, and Chenrezi is seen as an emanation of the compassion of all the buddhas. Even if you do not plan to begin such practices right away\, it is considered very positive to take such empowerments. By receiving empowerments\, auspicious seeds are planted in our being and these rituals are said to have a “ripening effect” on our spiritual path to awakening. We are thus encouraged to take such empowerments again and again. \nThe only prerequisite is to first take the vow of refuge\, which is a formal way to enter the Buddhist path. This will be offered before each initiation. There are no mandatory practice commitments for receiving any of these. \nLama Tsang Tsing is the resident lama of our sister center\, Kagyu Dakshang Chuling in Eugene\, Oregon\, and is a highly respected monk and practitioner. Lama Tsang Tsing spent some of his youth at Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and later did the second three-year retreat at Sonada under Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. He was later sent to America by Kalu Rinpoche to act as the retreat master for the three-year retreat attended by Lama Michael Conklin from 1986-1989. \nDates and times \nVajrasattva Empowerment: Friday\, July 10th at 7:00pm – 9:00pm\nGreen Tara Empowerment: Saturday\, July 11th at 2:00pm – 4:00pm\nChenrezi Empowerment: Sunday\, July 12th at 10:00am – 12:00pm\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/vajrasattva-green-tara-and-chenrezi-empowerments-with-venerable-lama-tsang-tsing/

SUMMARY:Buddha Nature: Our Original Purity
DESCRIPTION:In person at KCC and over Zoom \nFriday: 6:30–8:30pm\nSaturday and Sunday: 10:00–12:00pm\, 2:30–4:00pm\, and 4:30–6:00pm \nKagyu Changchub Chuling is thrilled to announce that Drupon Khenpo Lodrö Namgyal has accepted our invitation to visit North America and will be teaching at KCC over two weekends to guide and inspire our Dharma practice. Each weekend of teaching will have its own distinct theme\, and attendance can be for one or both of the weekends. The event will be translated by Lama Yeshe of Prajna Fire. \nThe teachings on buddha nature tell us that the nature of the mind of all beings is exactly the same as the nature of mind that Buddha Shakyamuni discovered some 2\,600 years ago. Upon his realization\, the Buddha described his experience when proclaiming: “Profound\, peaceful\, beyond concepts\, luminous\, and uncompounded; I have discovered this nectar-like truth…”. \nThis means that our process of awakening is not about searching for something that exists outside of us. Awakening simply entails progressively removing the veils and misconceptions that keep us from directly experiencing our deepest\, truest nature. All of the teachings of Buddhism are supports for priming our being to be more capable of seeing what we always have been. \nFor information on the second weekend of teachings\, Mind Training: Radical Openheartedness as Transformation\, click here. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \nDrupon Khenpo Lodrö Namgyal\n“Drupon Khenpo” is actually two titles denoting his spiritual training. He first earned the title of khenpo after excelling in scholarship as part of the initial class of enrollees at Rumtek Monastery’s monastic college or shedra. He subsequently entered the traditional three-year retreat under the direction of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche at Pullahari Monastery. Upon completion of these three years of meditation practice\, he was appointed drupon or “retreat master” by Rinpoche. Thus\, Drupon Khenpo’s teachings combine his vast scholarship with deep experience in meditation\, both of which are enhanced by his joyous and humorous personality. Upon his retirement from leading annual classes and retreats for foreigners at Pullahari Monastery in Nepal\, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche appointed Drupon Khenpo as his successor\, and he has been teaching in this capacity since 2005.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/buddha-nature-our-original-purity-with-drupon-khenpo/

SUMMARY:The Essence of Mind Training: Radical Openheartedness as Transformation\, Concluding with the Bodhisattva Vow
\nThe genre of teachings known as Mind Training is considered the very essence of Mahayana Buddhism. Mind Training provides instructions and practices for realizing both the wisdom of ultimate bodhichitta and the compassion of relative bodhichitta. Mind Training’s many aphorisms provide us with various tools to utilize our everyday experiences as means to reduce our self-grasping tendencies and to increase our loving-kindness and compassion. \nThese teachings on relative bodhichitta are like a handbook for life between meditation sessions. Many students have discovered the profundity of these instructions and benefited deeply from their accessibility and practicality. The implementation of the Mind Training curriculum is critical to progressing along the Buddhist path and further allows us to be more skillful companions in our broader and more intimate communities. \nTo deepen our commitment to this path of wisdom and compassion\, Drupon Khenpo will offer the opportunity to formally take the Bodhisattva Vow on the final afternoon of these teachings. In this ceremony\, we affirm our aspiration to attain awakening for the benefit of all beings and pledge to engage in the practices that manifest it. It will serve as an auspicious conclusion to two special weekends of Dharma sharing! Those who do not wish to take the vow may still attend the ceremony. \nFor information the first weekend of teaching\, Buddha Nature: Our Original Purity\, click here. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n\nDrupon Khenpo Lodrö Namgyal\n“Drupon Khenpo” is actually two titles denoting his spiritual training. SUMMARY:Bokar Mahamudra Seminar 2026
DESCRIPTION:In-person at SCOL and over Zoom \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche began this program for the benefit of modern practitioners who have busy lives but also wish to travel the path to awakening. The curriculum progresses through instruction on shamatha in year one\, vipashyana in year two\, and the union of these two in year three. This year\, we are pleased that Lama Sonam Dargye and Lama Kathleen will also provide support for the retreat. \nThe core of the program is establishing a commitment to a daily practice\, and this has proven very beneficial to assist many in cultivating a stable meditation practice. In the first year of the program\, there is a different shamatha technique for each day of the week\, but with a progression of resting more and more in open awareness meditation. One also engages in a brief daily contemplation on one of the four thoughts that turn the mind to dharma which hone our motivation or a loving-kindness and compassion practice called taking and sending (or tonglen) which further opens our hearts. Practitioners are further encouraged to do 100\,000 Chenrezi mantras—om mani padme hum—over the course of the year. \nIn the second year of the program\, participants begin working with vipashyana\, where one begins to investigate the nature of this mind that is resting in shamatha. This is the gateway to insight into the nature of mind. And for the third year\, one begins instruction on joining these two techniques of stable resting and insight. \nTraditionally\, the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition are also done. These meditations remove obstacles and create positive conditions that allow practitioners to engage more deeply in shamatha and vipashyana. These include refuge and prostrations\, the one hundred-syllable mantra of Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. These take about 40 minutes each day\, but for those who are not drawn to these\, this time can be spent with more shamatha or vipashyana. For those interested\, one can aspire to 5\,000 or 10\,000 of each of these practices per quarter. \nWho Should Attend\nPractitioners at all levels are welcome to join the seminar. It is an especially skillful program for people wishing to create a meaningful daily meditation practice in the mahamudra tradition. This retreat is held as a shared practice container\, and we ask that everyone who registers plan to be present for all sessions. Recordings will be available as a support for those attending live\, but not as an alternative way to participate. In addition\, we ask that those who join be willing to take on the accompanying practice commitments for one year. Participants should have already received the vow of refuge—the formal act of becoming Buddhist—or be ready to take it. The refuge vow will be offered at the seminar. \nThe Seminar\nThe day will begin with calm abiding meditation and end with the Chenrezi practice. There will be detailed instruction for all of the practices to be done over the course of the year and plenty of time for questions and discussion. With Lama Sonam and Lama Kathleen present this year\, we will have more time for special breakout groups for the various levels of practice. The daily schedule will be fairly full but will also allow for ample stretch breaks and time for rest and reflection. This retreat will be held in partial silence\, with silence maintained each morning until lunch. In addition\, several days will be held in full silence to help create a supportive atmosphere for practice. \nThe Founder and Teachers of the Program \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche\nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche (1940-2004) was a renowned master of the Karma Kagyu lineage and the principal lineage holder of Shangpa Kagyu\, which he inherited from his root guru\, Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. Drawing from a lifetime of study\, intensive meditation\, and many years of experience as a retreat master\, Bokar Rinpoche first offered this program in 1992. \nKhenchen Lodrö Donyö Rinpoche\nKhenchen Rinpoche was nearly inseparable from Bokar Rinpcohe for his whole life and assisted him at all of the seminars. Since the passing of Bokar Rinpoche\, Khenchen Rinpoche has assumed responsibility for the program and skillfully nurtured it. \nLama Eric met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 when he offered the seminar in Portland. He later did retreat in India and was asked to begin sharing these teachings in 2018. Lama Eric has served as KCC’s Resident Lama since January 2020. \nLama Sonam Dargye was a dharma brother of Lama Michael\, KCC’s former Resident Lama\, and they participated in the same three-year retreat. He was one of the early westerners to participate in Bokar Rinpoche’s program and assists at our sister dharma center in Eugene\, OR. \nLama Kathleen also met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 and practiced under the seminar’s guidance for well over a decade before her three-year retreat at SCOL under Lama Michael and Lama Tara. \nTo learn more about the history of the Mahamudra Seminar\, click here. \nBook Recommendations \nThe Torch of True Meaning by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye\nA classic guide to the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition which include refuge and prostrations\, Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. Paper copies of the book and a free ebook are both available. \nTurning Confusion into Clarity by Mingyur Rinpoche\nThis is a contemporary presentation on these preliminary practices which is very useful to help you understand more about the practices. It also offers many techniques that one can use to keep one’s engagement with these meditations fresh. \nOcean of Definitive Meaning by Thrangu Rinpoche\nTranscripts of Rinpoche’s teaching on the 9th Karmapa’s text of the same title. Wonderful descriptions of the preliminary and main practices of shamatha and vipashyana in here. \nOcean of Certainty by Traleg Kyabgon\nTraleg Rinpoche’s oral translation/teachings on the 9th Karmapa’s Ocean of Definitive Meaning. Very helpful for the shamatha and vipashyana teachings of the seminar. \n\nRetreat Schedule \nThe retreat opens on Friday\, Sept 11\, with dinner and an evening session and ends on Saturday\, Sept 19\, with a closing session and breakfast in the morning. Lodging and meals are included for those attending in person. For retreat days\, the schedule will be as follows: \n6:30 – 7:30 am Group meditation\n7:30 – 9:00 am Breakfast break\n9:00 – 10:30 am Teaching and meditation\n10:30 – 11:00 am Tea break\n11:00 – 12:00 pm Self-guided practice\n12:00 – 2:30 pm Lunch break \n\n2:30 – 4:00 pm Meditation and discussion\n4:00 – 4:30 pm Tea break\n4:30 – 5:30 pm Teaching and meditation\n5:30 – 7:00 pm Dinner break\n7:00 – 7:45 pm Chenrezi practice\n\n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER – IN PERSON \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER – ZOOM\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/bokar-mahamudra-seminar-2026/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The schedule for the Children’s Program has been adjusted through September. Please check the KCC calendar for upcoming dates. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-09-13/

SUMMARY:Art Presentation by Jef Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Join us after morning shamatha for a presentation of Jef Gunn’s artwork in the KCC community space\, where several of his pieces are currently on display. Below you’ll find Jef’s reflection on this collection along with a short bio for those who haven’t yet had the chance to meet him! \n\nI’ve been told that the Buddha once said: Nothing is as it appears. Nor is it otherwise. \nWhat makes form significant? We experience the world through our five senses. We make things. We find meaning in things\, in forms. How this happens is in some ways mysterious. It’s in the mind and in our five senses\, which are not separate. It’s also physical\, existent\, made of materials and time. And mind. Experience of life flows. \nEarth\, Wind\, Water\, Sky\, Mind. Patterns of meaning. \nThe paintings and prints presented here at KCC have been made over a couple of decades. We’ve selected artworks from my studio that attempt to represent aspects of the Buddha Dharma\, or the legends and practices of the Dharma\, in a modern idiom. Some of the patterns here I learned from our beloved Sanje Elliot\, who passed a few years ago. Others are inspired by other teachers\, like Lama Michael\, and my Sufi teacher\, Zeinob\, who directed me to Kagyu Buddhist practice and to KCC. And\, by our own meditation practices\, and by examples in existing artworks that have awakened a spirit of quiet knowing. \nOne example from which I’ve taken inspiration is the statue of Radiating Lokeshvara at the Honolulu Art Museum. The Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara. From the front it appears male with patterns of chain-mail armor ; from the back\, it appears female with patterns of sitting buddhas. From that stone carving\, without head\, or arms\, or legs\, but repeating seated buddhas and ovals\, I’ve produced several artworks. Some are here. The practice of repetition of the six syllables and the spaciousness that flows from that practice\, is shown in the repetitions of marks in some of the paintings. With each ink imprint\, or gold leaf flame\, the six syllables are whispered. Some include the thigse\, a geometric pattern for laying out the form of a standing or sitting Buddha\, or Bodhisattva\, that I learned from Sanje. \nThe Silent Bell series were prints from a large broken piece of steel that we found under the boiler here at KCC during the remodel: the three bells at the beginning and ending of meditation. This piece of steel now supports a statue of Kuan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) under the maple tree at my home. \nAbout Jef Gunn \nJef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawaii. He is for the most part self-taught\, having begun his training in drawing and painting within the California Junior College system in the early and mid 1970s. He has held two residencies in Europe\, which were deeply influential: fifteen months in Barcelona (1986-87) where he discovered the mediaeval religious icons in the Museo de Arte Catalán\, and Spanish abstract surrealists like Antoni Tàpies and Joan Miró; and seven months at the Cité Internationale des Arts\, (Paris)\, in 1988. His 2005 completion of a formal BFA program at Marylhurst University in Oregon provided a rigorous opportunity for Gunn to continue exploring the ideas and practices that inform his painting. He lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. \n“Painting is nothing less than an inquiry into the relationship between consciousness and the phenomenal world. Looking outside: painting the landscape en plein air is a spontaneous response that occurs somewhere between the sensation on the eye and perception of an object. As such\, it is a way of contemplation of light\, of mind\, of time and the passing moment. In this way\, according to Cézanne\, Claude Monet was “Only an eye\, but my God what an eye!” \nThe activity of mind is different when working in the studio\, where I am managing the means of abstracting and sublimating the original inspiration. Looking inside: the studio processes tend to be more calculated\, poeticized and layered. Sympathetic resonances develop between the spatial shapes and the textures of accident\, between the materials and the patterns of language\, and the possibility to suggest meaning. \nBoth processes are a delight to me. There is insight as well as humor and heartache in each. Both are mind revealing mind.” \nJef Gunn hosts annual painting retreats out at KCC’s Retreat Land\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling. The next one is currently scheduled for early October\, with more information to be shared soon.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/art-presentation-by-jef-gunn/

Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-10-11/
