SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The schedule for the Children’s Program has been adjusted through September. Please check the KCC calendar for upcoming dates. \nThe KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-09-13/

SUMMARY:Art Presentation by Jef Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Join us after morning shamatha for a presentation of Jef Gunn’s artwork in the KCC community space\, where several of his pieces are currently on display. Below you’ll find Jef’s reflection on this collection along with a short bio for those who haven’t yet had the chance to meet him! \n\nI’ve been told that the Buddha once said: Nothing is as it appears. Nor is it otherwise. \nWhat makes form significant? We experience the world through our five senses. We make things. We find meaning in things\, in forms. How this happens is in some ways mysterious. It’s in the mind and in our five senses\, which are not separate. It’s also physical\, existent\, made of materials and time. And mind. Experience of life flows. \nEarth\, Wind\, Water\, Sky\, Mind. Patterns of meaning. \nThe paintings and prints presented here at KCC have been made over a couple of decades. We’ve selected artworks from my studio that attempt to represent aspects of the Buddha Dharma\, or the legends and practices of the Dharma\, in a modern idiom. Some of the patterns here I learned from our beloved Sanje Elliot\, who passed a few years ago. Others are inspired by other teachers\, like Lama Michael\, and my Sufi teacher\, Zeinob\, who directed me to Kagyu Buddhist practice and to KCC. And\, by our own meditation practices\, and by examples in existing artworks that have awakened a spirit of quiet knowing. \nOne example from which I’ve taken inspiration is the statue of Radiating Lokeshvara at the Honolulu Art Museum. The Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara. From the front it appears male with patterns of chain-mail armor ; from the back\, it appears female with patterns of sitting buddhas. From that stone carving\, without head\, or arms\, or legs\, but repeating seated buddhas and ovals\, I’ve produced several artworks. Some are here. The practice of repetition of the six syllables and the spaciousness that flows from that practice\, is shown in the repetitions of marks in some of the paintings. With each ink imprint\, or gold leaf flame\, the six syllables are whispered. Some include the thigse\, a geometric pattern for laying out the form of a standing or sitting Buddha\, or Bodhisattva\, that I learned from Sanje. \nThe Silent Bell series were prints from a large broken piece of steel that we found under the boiler here at KCC during the remodel: the three bells at the beginning and ending of meditation. This piece of steel now supports a statue of Kuan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) under the maple tree at my home. \nAbout Jef Gunn \nJef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawaii. He is for the most part self-taught\, having begun his training in drawing and painting within the California Junior College system in the early and mid 1970s. He has held two residencies in Europe\, which were deeply influential: fifteen months in Barcelona (1986-87) where he discovered the mediaeval religious icons in the Museo de Arte Catalán\, and Spanish abstract surrealists like Antoni Tàpies and Joan Miró; and seven months at the Cité Internationale des Arts\, (Paris)\, in 1988. His 2005 completion of a formal BFA program at Marylhurst University in Oregon provided a rigorous opportunity for Gunn to continue exploring the ideas and practices that inform his painting. He lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. \n“Painting is nothing less than an inquiry into the relationship between consciousness and the phenomenal world. Looking outside: painting the landscape en plein air is a spontaneous response that occurs somewhere between the sensation on the eye and perception of an object. As such\, it is a way of contemplation of light\, of mind\, of time and the passing moment. In this way\, according to Cézanne\, Claude Monet was “Only an eye\, but my God what an eye!” \nThe activity of mind is different when working in the studio\, where I am managing the means of abstracting and sublimating the original inspiration. Looking inside: the studio processes tend to be more calculated\, poeticized and layered. Sympathetic resonances develop between the spatial shapes and the textures of accident\, between the materials and the patterns of language\, and the possibility to suggest meaning. \nBoth processes are a delight to me. There is insight as well as humor and heartache in each. Both are mind revealing mind.” \nJef Gunn hosts annual painting retreats out at KCC’s Retreat Land\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling. The next one is currently scheduled for early October and registration is open; find out more here.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/art-presentation-by-jef-gunn/

SUMMARY:Ser Chö Ösel Ling 25th Anniversary Gathering
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED \nThis year marks a remarkable milestone: 25 years of SCOL and 50 years of KCC. To honor this shared journey\, we’ll gather on the retreat land to celebrate all that has unfolded so far and to look ahead with enthusiasm to the retreats and possibilities yet to come. \nThis gathering will bring together friends\, neighbors\, and long‑time supporters of the retreat center\, many of whom played key roles in its founding\, maintenance\, and growth. The celebration will include a vegetarian lunch offered by SCOL\, opportunities to explore the land\, interest tables\, a history presentation\, information about the dharma and Buddhist retreat\, nature walks\, and activities for children. \nA Brief History of SCOL \nIn 2001\, KCC purchased the land which previously served as a horse ranch and lies on the ancestral lands of the Rock Creek Band of the Klickitat people. At that time\, the 240 acres held a modest two‑bedroom house\, a large barn\, corral fencing beside a heart‑shaped meadow\, a steady creek\, and a recovering forest of pine\, oak\, and fir. Since then\, development of a long‑term retreat center has continued\, including two cloistered retreat wings and several staff buildings. \nOver the years\, SCOL has hosted a one‑year retreat\, a three‑year retreat\, and many shorter retreats and gatherings. Each year we offer guided retreats\, opportunities for personal practice\, and themed weekends and workshops. All the while\, SCOL remains dedicated to nurturing and revitalizing the land so it may support the flora\, fauna\, and all who visit. \nTo learn more about the history of SCOL\, click here. \nStaying for the Weekend \nSangha members are invited to stay Friday night\, Saturday night\, or both. The main activities will be held between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday. We currently have capacity to host 35 people in cabins. Single cabins will not be available for this event\, only ones with double occupancy. Ample camping spaces will also be available. \nThere is no cost to stay; however\, we warmly encourage you to donate or become a sustaining supporter to help ensure dharma teachings remain available for many years to come! We are looking for volunteers for all aspects of this event. If you would like to volunteer to help\, please select the volunteer option on the registration form. \nBecause parking is limited\, we ask participants to carpool whenever possible. A carpool coordination system has been set up\, and you will receive an email with details after registering. \nPlease register by September 14\, even if you’re only attending on Saturday\, and include the number of people in your group. Even if you do not plan to stay overnight\, we need you to register if you intend to join us for the celebration. As lunch will be provided\, accurate numbers are essential for planning. You will receive additional information upon registration. \n  \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/ser-cho-osel-ling-25th-anniversary-gathering/

SUMMARY:Meeting to Discuss One-Year Retreat at SCOL
DESCRIPTION:Long retreat provides an opportunity for focused meditation practice on the Buddhist path. Inspired by Bokar Rinpoche\, with the vision of Lama Michael Conklin and the work of many others\, KCC created Ser Chö Ösel Ling (SCOL) as a place for long retreat. We conducted a one-year retreat in 2013\, and a three-year retreat beginning in 2015. Since then\, KCC has conducted many shorter retreats at SCOL to benefit the sangha and all beings. \nKCC would like to again offer the opportunity for long-term retreat at SCOL. We are now gauging interest for a retreat that would begin in 2028. Initial estimates place the cost at around $25K for a year. Determining the true cost depends on factors including how many retreatants we have. \nIf we have a suitable number of people to fill the one year retreat\, wonderful! If there are spaces remaining\, we would open up the opportunity to do six months. And if there is still space\, a three-month stint is possible.  \nAre you interested in long retreat? Do you have the conditions that make long retreat in 2028 feasible for you? \nIf you would like to hear more about joining a three\, six\, or twelve month retreat at SCOL\, please join our meeting in-person at KCC and via Zoom on Sunday\, September 27th at 1:00pm. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN ON ZOOM \n  \nMeeting ID: 891 4749 6014\nPasscode: 181464\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/meeting-to-discuss-one-year-retreat-at-scol/

SUMMARY:Women’s Fellowship Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:A Gathering for Femme‑Identifying Practitioners (AFAB\, Trans\, gender expansive\, etc. included) \nWe warmly invite you\, and any children who may accompany you\, to an in‑person conversation circle. While children are welcome\, please note that we are not able to offer separate childcare. \nTogether we’ll enjoy snacks and open a gentle space for reflection on how gender shapes our practice\, our sense of belonging\, and our connection with one another. \nPossible questions for exploration include: \n\nHow does your dharma practice feel informed by your gender?\nAre there obstacles to practice that you encounter which feel as if they are related to your gender identification?\nWhat would make you feel like your whole self was welcome here? Or if you already feel welcome\, what sparks that sense of connection?\nIf you are interested in connecting with other femme identifying folks\, how come? What part of your heart-mind yearns for this?\n\nCome as you are; your voice and presence matter. Nobody who wants to come will be turned away.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/womens-fellowship-afternoon/

SUMMARY:The World is Its Own Magic - A Weekend of Plein Air Painting and Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed. \nThis four-day residential weekend workshop offers techniques in outdoor landscape painting in the high desert forest of the eastern Columbia Gorge. \nThe workshop is designed for artists of varying skill levels who have some experience in drawing and composition; knowledge of color theory is helpful. We will explore color\, composition\, and perspective in new and complex ways allowing artists to unlock fresh avenues of expression and deepen their understanding of visual storytelling. \nHosted at SCOL\, near Goldendale\, Washington\, the schedule will include a guided morning meditation led by KCC teacher Kathleen Benz. We will allow ourselves to become still\, reflective and observant\, and from this mindful stillness we will visit our first painting site where Jef will give guidance on viewing the landscape\, seeing space\, and how it might be arranged in a rectangular canvas\, and then how to manage drawing and colors with mind and heart. \nThe tuition includes lodging\, vegetarian meals and guidance in painting and meditation. Students will need to bring their own painting materials; click here for a class materials list. The SCOL center will provide a cook and facilities staff\, but each student will be asked to complete a daily task of service. \nArtist Jef Gunn\nA Northwest native\, Jef Gunn studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s and held residencies in Barcelona and Paris in the 1980s. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge and helpful insight he is able to draw from each student their own natural way to paint\, while bringing to bear practical instruction through contemporary and historical examples. He has been teaching painting\, including landscape outdoors\, for 30 years. Jef has been a part of the KCC Buddhist community since moving to Portland in 1998. He was part of the team that built the retreat facility at SCOL. \nFrom Jef: \n“Over these years of meditation practice and learning Buddhist views on life\, ethics and kindness\, and care for all beings\, I’ve seen a shift in my work as an artist. Sometimes\, I’ve made this explicit in the forms of the work or in the titles\, with both abstract works and landscapes. \nBringing Buddhist awareness and perhaps a Daoist understanding\, life and living systems open before us. A hill is just a hill\, then it’s a metaphor\, then it’s a hill again. It lifts into sky and drifts into valley. River flows to the sea. Cloud flows. Warm colors and cool colors interact. The blues of the sky change as you look higher. The wind blows through you. You mix colors\, looking at the wide world for clues. You’re interacting with this wild inhabited land\, and you’re responding with irascible paints on a palette. \nJust as with following meditation instructions\, you follow a protocol with the palette\, the mixing knife\, the colors\, the canvas\, the impossible view\, its impossible spaciousness. The mind too is impossibly spacious. You can be present for the whole thing. You might even end up with a painting.” \nVisit Jef’s website here: www.jefgunn.com\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/the-world-is-its-own-magic-a-weekend-of-plein-air-painting-and-mindfulness/

SUMMARY:Community Yin Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Yin Yoga is a slow\, meditative style of yoga that invites stillness and deep release. Rather than flowing quickly from one pose to the next\, Yin encourages you to linger—holding postures for three to seven minutes at a time. This gentle yet profound approach allows the stretch to reach beyond the muscles\, into the body’s deeper connective tissues such as fascia\, joints\, and ligaments. \nUsing supportive props like bolsters\, blankets\, and blocks\, the body is encouraged to fully relax and let go. As tension melts away\, Yin Yoga cultivates greater flexibility\, mobility\, and inner spaciousness. Beyond the physical practice\, Yin invites mindfulness and quiet introspection. It slows the nervous system\, reduces stress\, and nurtures a sense of acceptance and presence—balancing the active\, fiery energies of daily life with calm\, restorative stillness. \nThese sessions are as much about inner reflection as they are about collective harmony\, a space where everyone is welcome to soften and simply be. \nParticipants must be eighteen years of age or older and will be required to sign a waiver before attending. The waiver can be printed out and filled out before arriving\, or we will have some on location. Please bring your own mat\, props\, and personal items. We recommend bringing a water bottle with a secure lid and a towel. This class is offered at no cost; donations are appreciated. \nFacilitated by Darin Milligan\nDarin is an avid rock climber\, boulderer\, mountain biker\, surfer and snowboarder who found stillness in the Yin Yoga practice as a counter balance to all of the Yang activities in his life. SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Program will be held from 9am – 10am this week to practice the Karmaoki Song. Karmaoki starts at 10am so Laurie Simpson will be with the kids\, or they can be with their parents throughout the event. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-7/

SUMMARY:Karmaoke: The Return!
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st\, the veil thins… and the Dharma sings! \nKarmaoke this year will also be streamed over Zoom for those not able to make it in person. However\, reader beware… If you wish to lead a song you must show up in the flesh. \nJoin us for a Halloween‑themed fall FUNdraiser full of song\, silliness\, and Dharma delight. After a short Sunday Morning Shamatha\, we’ll take a quick break and then dive straight into community karaoke\, followed by a seasonal potluck to keep the party going. \nLead a tune solo\, gather a few KCC friends to sing with you\, or invite the whole community to join in. If you’ve got a song\, we want to hear it. Everyone is invited to suggest songs they love that have inherent Dharma content (repeats from previous years are welcome!) Song submissions can be sent directly to Jennifer by email at jennifer@kcc.org through October 16th and the Karmaoke Team will put together a final list. \nIn the spirit of the season\, costumes are encouraged!  \nWalking through the neighborhood\, we’re surrounded by the season’s bright abundance: piles of orange pumpkins\, multicolored mums\, apples\, plums\, and figs. It’s a reminder of harvest time and the playful tradition of donning colorful costumes. Our Buddhist tradition offers so many characters to draw from: ghosts\, demons\, goddesses\, yogis… or simply follow whatever calls to your imagination. What will your Karmaoke costume be? \nKeep an eye out over the coming weeks for updates as we bring back old favorites\, or debut a new Dharma‑themed masterpiece. \nClick here for last years playlist. Save the date. We hope to see you there!\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/karmaoke-the-return/

SUMMARY:Practicing With the Heart-Mind
DESCRIPTION:This five-day retreat is at SCOL\, our 240 acre retreat land near Goldendale WA.\n \nThe Heart-mind is the seat of our nonconceptual knowing. Mahamudra meditation is the practice of learning how to let things be just as they are—neither grasping & encouraging them nor judging & rejecting them. \nIn this retreat we will explore practices that observe how our bodies seem to hold emotions and what happens in the body when emotions arise. Our purpose will be to simply allow experience rather than to change\, fix\, or explain anything. By becoming aware of what is there\, we can befriend it in a non-conceptual way. \nWithin a fairly relaxed schedule\, we will observe silence in the mornings\, and the days will be filled with guided meditations\, discussions\, and plenty of time for personal practice in nature. There will be time for personal interviews. This retreat is for practitioners of all levels. \nThe retreat will be looking through a dharma/meditation lens.\nIt is not oriented around trauma discovery and therapeutic healing.\nThere will not be a professional therapist onsite. \nNo reading is necessary. However\, for some understanding of this approach\, and the science behind it\, I suggest Why We Meditate by Tsoknyi Rinpoche & Daniel Goleman. \nIf you have questions or need more information\, contact Lama Kathleen. \nRetreat Schedule  \nThe retreat opens on Thursday\, November 5th\, with dinner and an evening session and ends on Monday\, November 9th\, with a closing session and breakfast in the morning. For retreat days\, the schedule will be as follows: \nAM\n6:30 – 7:30 am             Personal practice\n7:30 – 9:00 am             Breakfast break\n9:00 – 10:30 am           Instruction\, guided meditation\n10:30 – 11:00 am         Tea break\n11:00 – 12:00 pm         Practice session \nPM\n12:00 – 2:30 pm           Lunch break\n2:30 – 4:00 pm            Q&A\, discussion\n4:00 – 4:30 pm            Tea break\n4:30 – 5:30 pm            Practice session\n5:30 – 7:00 pm            Dinner break\n6:45 – 7:45pm             Group session \nRegister For In Person \n  \nREGISTER FOR ZOOM\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/practicing-with-the-heart-mind/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-9/2026-12-27/
