DESCRIPTION:Empowerment Opportunities Abound!\nRegistration for this event is closed. \nWe are pleased to announce that Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing has accepted our invitation to grant three empowerments at KCC as part of our yearlong celebration of our dharma center’s 50th anniversary. He will be bestowing the three initiations that are most essential to KCC’s programming: Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi. \nEmpowerment is a key feature of Vajrayana Buddhism and can be understood as a formal initiation for a particular yidam practice. A yidam is a manifestation of awakened mind—wisdom\, compassion\, and ability—in form. There is a practice for each yidam where we imagine that yidam (often regarding ourselves in that form) and recite a mantra. By imagining our being manifested as awakened body\, speech\, and mind\, these types of meditation are said to hasten our awakening. \nVajrasattva is associated with purification and is part of the ngondro\, or preliminary\, practices\, of the Mahamudra tradition. Green Tara is considered the embodiment of the activity of all the buddhas\, and Chenrezi is seen as an emanation of the compassion of all the buddhas. Even if you do not plan to begin such practices right away\, it is considered very positive to take such empowerments. By receiving empowerments\, auspicious seeds are planted in our being and these rituals are said to have a “ripening effect” on our spiritual path to awakening. We are thus encouraged to take such empowerments again and again. \nThe only prerequisite is to first take the vow of refuge\, which is a formal way to enter the Buddhist path. This will be offered before each initiation. There are no mandatory practice commitments for receiving any of these. \nLama Tsang Tsing is the resident lama of our sister center\, Kagyu Dakshang Chuling in Eugene\, Oregon\, and is a highly respected monk and practitioner. Lama Tsang Tsing spent some of his youth at Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and later did the second three-year retreat at Sonada under Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life and Activity of Lama Michael Conklin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two hours of sharing and appreciation followed by a reception with refreshments and more memories.\nIn 1974\, a thirty-year-old Michael Conklin humored his elder friend\, Hugh O’Neil\, and agreed to attend a teaching by some old Tibetan Buddhist lama. That lama was Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, and that seemingly chance encounter deeply influenced the life of the relatively young Michael Conklin\, and perhaps\, the lives of many of you reading this. In the presence of that wizened and gentle old lama\, an unsuspecting Michael had an experience that radically altered the trajectory of his life. From that first encounter\, he knew that things would never be the same. \nMichael became part of the small but committed group of students in San Francisco who began looking for a physical space where Kalu Rinpoche’s activity might be nurtured and allowed to flourish. A first home for the dharma center was found\, and so began Kagyu Droden Kunchab\, Kalu Rinpoche’s first center in the States. Michael served as president of the board of directors from its inception until\, under the direction and inspiration of Kalu Rinpoche\, Lama Lodu organized a three-year retreat in Marcola\, Oregon. Michael entered the three-year retreat in 1986—led by Lama Tsang Tsing\, now of Eugene\, Oregon—and it concluded in 1989. \nAfter the retreat\, Lama Michael and Tara went on a pilgrimage to the Indian subcontinent\, where Lama Michael had served in the Peace Corps earlier in his life. Upon returning to San Francisco\, he worked in the corporate world for a bit—no doubt bringing a quizzical presence and some subversive energy to the culture of Chevron. Sanje Elliot\, one of the early students who met Kalu Rinpoche before his visits to North America\, had recently become president of Kagyu Changchub Chuling in Portland following the retirement of its previous teacher\, Lama Thinley Dupa. Sanje was an old friend of Lama Michael’s from the early days in San Francisco and suggested inviting him and Tara to meet the small community in Portland. \nLeaping to the unknown\, they moved to Portland\, and Lama Michael began teaching at KCC. His relaxed presence\, authenticity\, humor\, and insightfulness—all seasoned with just the right amount of healthy cynicism—created an open and welcoming space which began to fill with more and more hungry seekers. Students came; the center flourished; and Lama Michael began to impact the life trajectory of many of his own students. \nIf you are one of these individuals who was deeply moved by Lama Michael\, come and join us for a ceremony of remembrance and appreciation. In 1994\, Eric Triebelhorn came to KCC as a recent college graduate interested in Buddhism. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. SUMMARY:Vipashyana: Exploring the Nature of Being
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed. \nIn the wisdom tradition of Mahamudra\, the principal meditation practices are shamatha and vipashyana. With the mind resting at ease through shamatha (or calm abiding meditation)\, we gain some respite from the seemingly constant barrage of thoughts and emotions\, which when not understood\, serve to veil the nature of our being. But shamatha practice is not sufficient to eradicate our confusion. It is vipashyana meditation that leads to liberating insight into the nature of our being and the nature of our experiences of thoughts\, emotions\, and perceptions. \nVipashyana practice is an analytical approach to meditation\, but not in an ordinary intellectual sense. As Traleg Rinpoche says\, these investigations are “designed to cut through to the very heart of things—to pave the way for a direct insight into the very nature of ultimate reality itself… The Mahamudra teachings counsel that we cannot understand the nature of reality without understanding the nature of the mind\, and this understanding is the whole purpose of vipashyana meditation.” \nIn general\, before beginning vipashyana practice\, a decent foundation of shamatha meditation is important. If you are new to vipashyana practice\, it is suggested that you have at least a year of relatively consistent shamatha practice experience. Otherwise\, it may prove difficult to maintain mindfulness and awareness during the insight investigations. If you are not sure if the retreat is right for you\, contact Lama Eric. \nThis retreat is held as a shared practice container\, and we ask that everyone who registers\, whether attending in person or on Zoom\, plan to be present for all sessions. Recordings will be available as a reference for those who attend live\, but not as an alternative way to take part. DESCRIPTION:Followed by a Potluck Lunch\nIn-person and via Zoom \nIn KCC’s 50th anniversary year\, we will honor our connection to both the dharma center’s founder\, Kalu Rinpoche\, and his successor\, Bokar Rinpoche\, by practicing Milarepa’s Guru Yoga and Feast in their honor. This date falls between the anniversary of the passing of the previous Kalu Rinpoche (May 10\, 1989) and the birthday of the reincarnation of Bokar Rinpoche (April 25\, 2006). You needn’t have any empowerment nor previous experience with the practice to attend. \nA guru yoga is a practice where we imagine a prominent master of the lineage before us\, in this case Milarepa\, and that this being is also the essence of our other teachers and inspirations\, such as Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. We then chant a text\, making offerings and supplications to these masters. \nTowards the end of the ritual\, we will chant a few songs composed by Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche and will continue with a shared “feast”— a small bit of consecrated food and drink which we consume as part of the practice. At the end\, we receive blessing and inspiration from Milarepa\, mix our mind with the awakened mind of these masters\, rest for a bit\, and conclude with an aspiration prayer. At the conclusion of this\, we will share in a potluck lunch which will begin around 12:00pm. \nThe text will be displayed on the screen in the meditation hall and on the Zoom screen. SUMMARY:SCOL Spring Work Party
DESCRIPTION:SCOL hosts work parties several times a year to serve together on major projects. These are opportunities to meet in a more informal setting\, socialize\, and complete tasks needed to operate our retreat facility and a property of this size. \nThis May’s work party will focus on fire prevention and preparedness. We will use tools such as weedwhackers\, leaf blowers\, and pole saws to get ready for what may be a dangerous fire season due to such a mild winter. SCOL staff and our skilled volunteer\, Bruce Niemann\, will head up training and projects around the main retreat buildings. There are also less physical tasks appropriate for different skills and abilities. All are welcome. \nThe work will start at 10:00am on Saturday May 2\, including a vegetarian lunch at noon provided by SCOL\, then a second work session in the afternoon from 2:00-4:00. As always\, lodging is free\, and you are welcome to come on Friday and stay through Sunday. Cabins are first-come-first-served. We will not have a cook\, so plan to bring your own food other than Saturday lunch. SUMMARY:Personal Practice Retreat
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to be able to once again host our annual one-month opportunity for personal retreat at Ser Chö Ösel Ling\, our retreat land in Goldendale\, WA. Some may sign up for the entire month and others will come for stays ranging from a weekend to three weeks. Each week of retreat will begin on a Friday from February 20 until March 20\, 2026. Time periods available are for 1-week\, 2-weeks\, 3-weeks\, 4-weeks and weekends\, all beginning on a Friday. \nDuring the personal retreat time\, all retreatants keep the same schedule and practice on their own in their rooms or in one of the meditation halls. Everyone gathers for meals and in the evening after dinner for a short meditation and the recitation of aspiration prayers or inspirational songs. All of the meals will be provided. \nThe month of personal retreat is an excellent way to deepen one’s practice in the support of other community members. Being able to devote more time to meditation away from our habitually busy environs can be very inspiring and nurturing. Each day will have periods of silence\, and silence will also be observed each week for a number of days. \nBefore engaging in personal retreat\, it is recommended that participants have previous experience that includes at least some facilitated group retreat and perhaps some individual retreat. The most skillful approach to personal retreat is to begin with a weekend and gradually increase the length of one’s stay. Beginning with a retreat that is beyond one’s current capacity can undermine the potential benefit of one’s stay and unnecessarily dampen enthusiasm for future retreat. \nRegardless of experience\, each participant will create an individualized practice plan – either by themselves or in consultation with an advisor. If you are new to personal retreat with KCC\, we request that you speak with an advisor about creating an outline for your retreat in order to facilitate a meaningful experience. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Losar 2026\, year of the Fire Horse\, at SCOL on February 18! \nIt is traditional on the Tibetan New Year to do a thorough cleaning in preparation for the coming year. SCOL invites you to our Goldendale retreat center for a work party to clean the facility to prepare for the 2026 retreat season. \nWork will begin at 10 am February 18th\, a celebration lunch will be provided at noon\, then another work session will be held from 2 – 4 pm. We will be concentrating on all indoor spaces\, including cabins\, apartments\, shrine rooms\, dining areas\, and yoga rooms\, plus the traditional replacing of prayer flags on the property. \nYou are welcome to come for the day or spend the night\, either Tuesday or Wednesday\, free of charge. Other than Wednesday lunch\, you are responsible for your own meals. You are welcome to use the cloister dining areas for preparing and storing food. Furthermore\, this marks the beginning of KCC’s 50th anniversary year\, with special events and programs planned to honor our history\, celebrate our community\, and envision together the path ahead. \nFor this retreat\, the current Sunday teachers—Lama Kathleen\, Peter Wood\, Tim Campbell\, Erik Fromme\, Cynthia Irvine and David Thornburgh—will join Lama Eric to lead us in a variety of contemplations\, discussion\, meditations\, and other creative rituals over these two days. We will rejoice in our efforts of the past twelve months\, use the occasion to turn away from unhelpful patterns\, and create meaningful aspirations for the year to come. \nOn the morning of January 1st at 11:00 AM\, there will be a refuge ceremony. You can come to take refuge without joining the two days of retreat; likewise\, you may join the retreat without taking refuge. Formally going for refuge is a declaration of beginning the journey along the Buddhist path. In this brief ceremony\, one goes for refuge in the Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha (the teacher\, the teachings\, and the exalted community of followers) as supports for one’s awakening. A token amount of hair is cut and a Buddhist name is given. You can hear more about taking refuge in the video below. If you would like to take refuge\, please contact Lama Eric. \nCome join us for this annual community ritual to move into the new year with dharma friends! \nYou can join this event in person at KCC or via Zoom. SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:The KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group.
