SUMMARY:Bokar Mahamudra Seminar 2026
DESCRIPTION:In-person at SCOL and over Zoom \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche began this program for the benefit of modern practitioners who have busy lives but also wish to travel the path to awakening. The curriculum progresses through instruction on shamatha in year one\, vipashyana in year two\, and the union of these two in year three. This year\, we are pleased that Lama Sonam Dargye and Lama Kathleen will also provide support for the retreat. \nThe core of the program is establishing a commitment to a daily practice\, and this has proven very beneficial to assist many in cultivating a stable meditation practice. In the first year of the program\, there is a different shamatha technique for each day of the week\, but with a progression of resting more and more in open awareness meditation. One also engages in a brief daily contemplation on one of the four thoughts that turn the mind to dharma which hone our motivation or a loving-kindness and compassion practice called taking and sending (or tonglen) which further opens our hearts. Practitioners are further encouraged to do 100\,000 Chenrezi mantras—om mani padme hum—over the course of the year. \nIn the second year of the program\, participants begin working with vipashyana\, where one begins to investigate the nature of this mind that is resting in shamatha. This is the gateway to insight into the nature of mind. And for the third year\, one begins instruction on joining these two techniques of stable resting and insight. \nTraditionally\, the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition are also done. These meditations remove obstacles and create positive conditions that allow practitioners to engage more deeply in shamatha and vipashyana. These include refuge and prostrations\, the one hundred-syllable mantra of Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. These take about 40 minutes each day\, but for those who are not drawn to these\, this time can be spent with more shamatha or vipashyana. For those interested\, one can aspire to 5\,000 or 10\,000 of each of these practices per quarter. \nWho Should Attend\nPractitioners at all levels are welcome to join the seminar. It is an especially skillful program for people wishing to create a meaningful daily meditation practice in the mahamudra tradition. This retreat is held as a shared practice container\, and we ask that everyone who registers plan to be present for all sessions. Recordings will be available as a support for those attending live\, but not as an alternative way to participate. In addition\, we ask that those who join be willing to take on the accompanying practice commitments for one year. Participants should have already received the vow of refuge—the formal act of becoming Buddhist—or be ready to take it. The refuge vow will be offered at the seminar. \nThe Seminar\nThe day will begin with calm abiding meditation and end with the Chenrezi practice. There will be detailed instruction for all of the practices to be done over the course of the year and plenty of time for questions and discussion. With Lama Sonam and Lama Kathleen present this year\, we will have more time for special breakout groups for the various levels of practice. The daily schedule will be fairly full but will also allow for ample stretch breaks and time for rest and reflection. This retreat will be held in partial silence\, with silence maintained each morning until lunch. In addition\, several days will be held in full silence to help create a supportive atmosphere for practice. \nThe Founder and Teachers of the Program \nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche\nKyabje Bokar Rinpoche (1940-2004) was a renowned master of the Karma Kagyu lineage and the principal lineage holder of Shangpa Kagyu\, which he inherited from his root guru\, Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. Drawing from a lifetime of study\, intensive meditation\, and many years of experience as a retreat master\, Bokar Rinpoche first offered this program in 1992. \nKhenchen Lodrö Donyö Rinpoche\nKhenchen Rinpoche was nearly inseparable from Bokar Rinpcohe for his whole life and assisted him at all of the seminars. Since the passing of Bokar Rinpoche\, Khenchen Rinpoche has assumed responsibility for the program and skillfully nurtured it. \nLama Eric met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 when he offered the seminar in Portland. He later did retreat in India and was asked to begin sharing these teachings in 2018. Lama Eric has served as KCC’s Resident Lama since January 2020. \nLama Sonam Dargye was a dharma brother of Lama Michael\, KCC’s former Resident Lama\, and they participated in the same three-year retreat. He was one of the early westerners to participate in Bokar Rinpoche’s program and assists at our sister dharma center in Eugene\, OR. \nLama Kathleen also met Bokar Rinpoche in 1996 and practiced under the seminar’s guidance for well over a decade before her three-year retreat at SCOL under Lama Michael and Lama Tara. \nTo learn more about the history of the Mahamudra Seminar\, click here. \nBook Recommendations \nThe Torch of True Meaning by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye\nA classic guide to the preliminary practices (ngondro) of the mahamudra tradition which include refuge and prostrations\, Vajrasattva\, mandala offering\, and guru yoga. Paper copies of the book and a free ebook are both available. \nTurning Confusion into Clarity by Mingyur Rinpoche\nThis is a contemporary presentation on these preliminary practices which is very useful to help you understand more about the practices. It also offers many techniques that one can use to keep one’s engagement with these meditations fresh. \nOcean of Definitive Meaning by Thrangu Rinpoche\nTranscripts of Rinpoche’s teaching on the 9th Karmapa’s text of the same title. Wonderful descriptions of the preliminary and main practices of shamatha and vipashyana in here. \nOcean of Certainty by Traleg Kyabgon\nTraleg Rinpoche’s oral translation/teachings on the 9th Karmapa’s Ocean of Definitive Meaning. Very helpful for the shamatha and vipashyana teachings of the seminar. \n\nRetreat Schedule \nThe retreat opens on Friday\, Sept 11\, with dinner and an evening session and ends on Saturday\, Sept 19\, with a closing session and breakfast in the morning. Lodging and meals are included for those attending in person. For retreat days\, the schedule will be as follows: \n6:30 – 7:30 am Group meditation\n7:30 – 9:00 am Breakfast break\n9:00 – 10:30 am Teaching and meditation\n10:30 – 11:00 am Tea break\n11:00 – 12:00 pm Self-guided practice\n12:00 – 2:30 pm Lunch break \n\n2:30 – 4:00 pm Meditation and discussion\n4:00 – 4:30 pm Tea break\n4:30 – 5:30 pm Teaching and meditation\n5:30 – 7:00 pm Dinner break\n7:00 – 7:45 pm Chenrezi practice\n\n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER – IN PERSON \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER – ZOOM\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/bokar-mahamudra-seminar-2026/

SUMMARY:Children's Program
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The schedule for the Children’s Program has been adjusted through September. Please check the KCC calendar for upcoming dates. \nThe KCC Children’s Program is an opportunity to introduce children to Buddhist values within a supportive\, sincere dharma community using simple dharma activities\, storytelling\, open discussion\, songs\, art projects and activities\, including play\, to promote kindness and compassion. Our goal is to provide a fun\, meaningful experience for all. \nSunday Morning Children’s Program \nOn the second and fourth Sundays of each month\, from 9:00 to 11:00 am\, we offer the Sunday Morning Children’s Program. This program normally starts in September and runs through the second Sunday in June. In July and August we meet once a month on the fourth Sunday. We require that at least one parent or guardian be present at KCC when their child attends. \nThe age range we currently serve is 6 to 12; however\, we do allow slightly younger and older children on a case by case basis as appropriate. Please feel free to discuss this with the program coordinator\, Laurie Simpson\, if needed. Email contact here. \nWhile there is no fee for the program\, dana (offerings) are accepted and go towards helping us continue providing programs such as these. In order to support the program on Sundays we ask that parents agree to be available to assist the teacher if needed – this is a shared role and can be filled by parents or other adults who wish to participate in this way. During the regular school year please note that we request you consider committing to bringing your child both Sundays each month throughout this time frame\, but this is not required. \nAlso please be aware that\, to attend this program\, your child needs to be able to manage their speech and physical activity cooperatively in a small group to help maintain a peaceful children’s sangha. If this is a concern we ask that you attend with your child until they are comfortable with the group. Ultimately we want to be as inclusive as possible\, but must also work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all attending.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/childrens-program-2-3-2-2/2026-09-13/

SUMMARY:Art Presentation by Jef Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Join us after morning shamatha for a presentation of Jef Gunn’s artwork in the KCC community space\, where several of his pieces are currently on display. Below you’ll find Jef’s reflection on this collection along with a short bio for those who haven’t yet had the chance to meet him! \n\nI’ve been told that the Buddha once said: Nothing is as it appears. Nor is it otherwise. \nWhat makes form significant? We experience the world through our five senses. We make things. We find meaning in things\, in forms. How this happens is in some ways mysterious. It’s in the mind and in our five senses\, which are not separate. It’s also physical\, existent\, made of materials and time. And mind. Experience of life flows. \nEarth\, Wind\, Water\, Sky\, Mind. Patterns of meaning. \nThe paintings and prints presented here at KCC have been made over a couple of decades. We’ve selected artworks from my studio that attempt to represent aspects of the Buddha Dharma\, or the legends and practices of the Dharma\, in a modern idiom. Some of the patterns here I learned from our beloved Sanje Elliot\, who passed a few years ago. Others are inspired by other teachers\, like Lama Michael\, and my Sufi teacher\, Zeinob\, who directed me to Kagyu Buddhist practice and to KCC. And\, by our own meditation practices\, and by examples in existing artworks that have awakened a spirit of quiet knowing. \nOne example from which I’ve taken inspiration is the statue of Radiating Lokeshvara at the Honolulu Art Museum. The Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara. From the front it appears male with patterns of chain-mail armor ; from the back\, it appears female with patterns of sitting buddhas. From that stone carving\, without head\, or arms\, or legs\, but repeating seated buddhas and ovals\, I’ve produced several artworks. Some are here. The practice of repetition of the six syllables and the spaciousness that flows from that practice\, is shown in the repetitions of marks in some of the paintings. With each ink imprint\, or gold leaf flame\, the six syllables are whispered. Some include the thigse\, a geometric pattern for laying out the form of a standing or sitting Buddha\, or Bodhisattva\, that I learned from Sanje. \nThe Silent Bell series were prints from a large broken piece of steel that we found under the boiler here at KCC during the remodel: the three bells at the beginning and ending of meditation. This piece of steel now supports a statue of Kuan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) under the maple tree at my home. \nAbout Jef Gunn \nJef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawaii. He is for the most part self-taught\, having begun his training in drawing and painting within the California Junior College system in the early and mid 1970s. He has held two residencies in Europe\, which were deeply influential: fifteen months in Barcelona (1986-87) where he discovered the mediaeval religious icons in the Museo de Arte Catalán\, and Spanish abstract surrealists like Antoni Tàpies and Joan Miró; and seven months at the Cité Internationale des Arts\, (Paris)\, in 1988. His 2005 completion of a formal BFA program at Marylhurst University in Oregon provided a rigorous opportunity for Gunn to continue exploring the ideas and practices that inform his painting. He lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. \n“Painting is nothing less than an inquiry into the relationship between consciousness and the phenomenal world. Looking outside: painting the landscape en plein air is a spontaneous response that occurs somewhere between the sensation on the eye and perception of an object. As such\, it is a way of contemplation of light\, of mind\, of time and the passing moment. In this way\, according to Cézanne\, Claude Monet was “Only an eye\, but my God what an eye!” \nThe activity of mind is different when working in the studio\, where I am managing the means of abstracting and sublimating the original inspiration. Looking inside: the studio processes tend to be more calculated\, poeticized and layered. Sympathetic resonances develop between the spatial shapes and the textures of accident\, between the materials and the patterns of language\, and the possibility to suggest meaning. \nBoth processes are a delight to me. There is insight as well as humor and heartache in each. Both are mind revealing mind.” \nJef Gunn hosts annual painting retreats out at KCC’s Retreat Land\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling. The next one is currently scheduled for early October\, with more information to be shared soon.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/art-presentation-by-jef-gunn/
