SUMMARY:Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi Empowerments with Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing
DESCRIPTION:Empowerment Opportunities Abound!\nRegistration for this event is closed. \nWe are pleased to announce that Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing has accepted our invitation to grant three empowerments at KCC as part of our yearlong celebration of our dharma center’s 50th anniversary. He will be bestowing the three initiations that are most essential to KCC’s programming: Vajrasattva\, Green Tara\, and Chenrezi. \nEmpowerment is a key feature of Vajrayana Buddhism and can be understood as a formal initiation for a particular yidam practice. A yidam is a manifestation of awakened mind—wisdom\, compassion\, and ability—in form. There is a practice for each yidam where we imagine that yidam (often regarding ourselves in that form) and recite a mantra. By imagining our being manifested as awakened body\, speech\, and mind\, these types of meditation are said to hasten our awakening. \nVajrasattva is associated with purification and is part of the ngondro\, or preliminary\, practices\, of the Mahamudra tradition. Green Tara is considered the embodiment of the activity of all the buddhas\, and Chenrezi is seen as an emanation of the compassion of all the buddhas. Even if you do not plan to begin such practices right away\, it is considered very positive to take such empowerments. By receiving empowerments\, auspicious seeds are planted in our being and these rituals are said to have a “ripening effect” on our spiritual path to awakening. We are thus encouraged to take such empowerments again and again. \nThe only prerequisite is to first take the vow of refuge\, which is a formal way to enter the Buddhist path. This will be offered before each initiation. There are no mandatory practice commitments for receiving any of these. \nLama Tsang Tsing is the resident lama of our sister center\, Kagyu Dakshang Chuling in Eugene\, Oregon\, and is a highly respected monk and practitioner. Lama Tsang Tsing spent some of his youth at Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet and later did the second three-year retreat at Sonada under Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche. SUMMARY:Tending the Land: July Stewardship Day at SCOL
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of care on the retreat land\, lodging and lunch included.\nSer Chö Ösel Ling\, KCC’s retreat land out in Goldendale\, WA\, hosts work parties several times a year to serve together for major projects and larger tasks. These are opportunities to meet in a more informal setting\, socialize\, and complete tasks needed to operate our retreat facility and a property of this size. \nThis July’s work party will focus on fire prevention and preparedness and adding a fresh coat of paint the retreat cabins. We need hearty souls\, not shy about pitching in with physical tasks\, that are open to training on and using tools such as weed whackers\, leaf blowers\, and pole saws. There are also less physical tasks appropriate for different skills and abilities. All are welcome! \nThe work will start at 10:00am on July 25\, stop for a vegetarian lunch at noon provided by SCOL\, then resume for a second work session in the afternoon from 2:00 – 4:00. As always\, lodging is free\, and you are welcome to come on Friday and stay through Sunday. Cabins are first-come-first-choice. We will not have a cook\, so plan to bring your own food other than Saturday lunch. It is a good idea to also bring work gloves\, sturdy shoes or boots\, a rain jacket\, a good H2O container\, and a sun hat. If you have your own safety glasses and ear protection\, it is recommended\, though SCOL also has these on site. \nPlease email Vicki at scol.kcc@gmail.com to RSVP by July 20. \nIf you would like to join but do not have transport\, let Vicki know in your email and she will put you in touch with other members of the KCC sangha attending who can offer a ride.
