SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life and Activity of Lama Michael Conklin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two hours of sharing and appreciation followed by a reception with refreshments and more memories.\nIn 1974\, a thirty-year-old Michael Conklin humored his elder friend\, Hugh O’Neil\, and agreed to attend a teaching by some old Tibetan Buddhist lama. That lama was Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche\, and that seemingly chance encounter deeply influenced the life of the relatively young Michael Conklin\, and perhaps\, the lives of many of you reading this. In the presence of that wizened and gentle old lama\, an unsuspecting Michael had an experience that radically altered the trajectory of his life. From that first encounter\, he knew that things would never be the same. \nMichael became part of the small but committed group of students in San Francisco who began looking for a physical space where Kalu Rinpoche’s activity might be nurtured and allowed to flourish. A first home for the dharma center was found\, and so began Kagyu Droden Kunchab\, Kalu Rinpoche’s first center in the States. Michael served as president of the board of directors from its inception until\, under the direction and inspiration of Kalu Rinpoche\, Lama Lodu organized a three-year retreat in Marcola\, Oregon. Michael entered the three-year retreat in 1986—led by Lama Tsang Tsing\, now of Eugene\, Oregon—and it concluded in 1989. \nAfter the retreat\, Lama Michael and Tara went on a pilgrimage to the Indian subcontinent\, where Lama Michael had served in the Peace Corps earlier in his life. Upon returning to San Francisco\, he worked in the corporate world for a bit—no doubt bringing a quizzical presence and some subversive energy to the culture of Chevron. Sanje Elliot\, one of the early students who met Kalu Rinpoche before his visits to North America\, had recently become president of Kagyu Changchub Chuling in Portland following the retirement of its previous teacher\, Lama Thinley Dupa. Sanje was an old friend of Lama Michael’s from the early days in San Francisco and suggested inviting him and Tara to meet the small community in Portland. \nLeaping to the unknown\, they moved to Portland\, and Lama Michael began teaching at KCC. His relaxed presence\, authenticity\, humor\, and insightfulness—all seasoned with just the right amount of healthy cynicism—created an open and welcoming space which began to fill with more and more hungry seekers. Students came; the center flourished; and Lama Michael began to impact the life trajectory of many of his own students. \nIf you are one of these individuals who was deeply moved by Lama Michael\, come and join us for a ceremony of remembrance and appreciation. The vast majority of the time will be spent listening to reflections on Lama Michael from the attendees. Please consider what you might say beforehand and keep your sharing to about a minute to allow for as many people to speak as possible. If you would like to submit something in writing\, you can use this form. \nThe responses can be viewed by all here. \nCome if you knew Lama Michael; come if you didn’t; come if you haven’t visited KCC in a while; and come if it’s your new home!\nJoin Online \nClick the Zoom button below to enter the session. If you join early\, you’ll be placed in a waiting room until the session begins. \nDepending on your Zoom settings\, you may be asked to enter a passcode for this event. \nPasscode: 798448 \nIf you experience any issues accessing the session\, please reach out via email at zoom@kcc.org. \n  \nJOIN ON ZOOM \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/celebrating-the-life-and-activity-of-lama-michael-conklin/

SUMMARY:Engaged Buddhism Meeting
DESCRIPTION:There are two wings to our practice – wisdom and compassion. If we only exercise one wing\, we cannot fly. Of course\, to do this skillfully we must keep the wing of wisdom and equanimity-towards-all working simultaneously. \nFor this meeting\, we’ll take time to check in\, reflect together\, and discuss the principles and precepts of Engaged Buddhism as described here\, considering how they can inform our practice and the way we move through the world. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Tending the Land: July Stewardship Day at SCOL
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of care on the retreat land\, lodging and lunch included.\nSer Chö Ösel Ling\, KCC’s retreat land out in Goldendale\, WA\, hosts work parties several times a year to serve together for major projects and larger tasks. These are opportunities to meet in a more informal setting\, socialize\, and complete tasks needed to operate our retreat facility and a property of this size. \nThis July’s work party will focus on fire prevention and preparedness and adding a fresh coat of paint the retreat cabins. We need hearty souls\, not shy about pitching in with physical tasks\, that are open to training on and using tools such as weed whackers\, leaf blowers\, and pole saws. There are also less physical tasks appropriate for different skills and abilities. All are welcome! \nThe work will start at 10:00am on July 25\, stop for a vegetarian lunch at noon provided by SCOL\, then resume for a second work session in the afternoon from 2:00 – 4:00. As always\, lodging is free\, and you are welcome to come on Friday and stay through Sunday. Cabins are first-come-first-choice. We will not have a cook\, so plan to bring your own food other than Saturday lunch. It is a good idea to also bring work gloves\, sturdy shoes or boots\, a rain jacket\, a good H2O container\, and a sun hat. If you have your own safety glasses and ear protection\, it is recommended\, though SCOL also has these on site. \nPlease email Vicki at scol.kcc@gmail.com to RSVP by July 20. \nIf you would like to join but do not have transport\, let Vicki know in your email and she will put you in touch with other members of the KCC sangha attending who can offer a ride. Likewise\, if you plan to join and have additional spots available\, please let Vicki know. \nJoin in the fun\, company\, and a chance to enjoy our beautiful environment! \nVicki Fields\nSCOL Operations Manager\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/tending-the-land-july-stewardship-day-at-scol/

SUMMARY:Art Presentation by Jef Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Join us after morning shamatha for a presentation of Jef Gunn’s artwork in the KCC community space\, where several of his pieces are currently on display. Below you’ll find Jef’s reflection on this collection along with a short bio for those who haven’t yet had the chance to meet him! \n\nI’ve been told that the Buddha once said: Nothing is as it appears. Nor is it otherwise. \nWhat makes form significant? We experience the world through our five senses. We make things. We find meaning in things\, in forms. How this happens is in some ways mysterious. It’s in the mind and in our five senses\, which are not separate. It’s also physical\, existent\, made of materials and time. And mind. Experience of life flows. \nEarth\, Wind\, Water\, Sky\, Mind. Patterns of meaning. \nThe paintings and prints presented here at KCC have been made over a couple of decades. We’ve selected artworks from my studio that attempt to represent aspects of the Buddha Dharma\, or the legends and practices of the Dharma\, in a modern idiom. Some of the patterns here I learned from our beloved Sanje Elliot\, who passed a few years ago. Others are inspired by other teachers\, like Lama Michael\, and my Sufi teacher\, Zeinob\, who directed me to Kagyu Buddhist practice and to KCC. And\, by our own meditation practices\, and by examples in existing artworks that have awakened a spirit of quiet knowing. \nOne example from which I’ve taken inspiration is the statue of Radiating Lokeshvara at the Honolulu Art Museum. The Boddhisatva Avalokiteshvara. From the front it appears male with patterns of chain-mail armor ; from the back\, it appears female with patterns of sitting buddhas. From that stone carving\, without head\, or arms\, or legs\, but repeating seated buddhas and ovals\, I’ve produced several artworks. Some are here. The practice of repetition of the six syllables and the spaciousness that flows from that practice\, is shown in the repetitions of marks in some of the paintings. With each ink imprint\, or gold leaf flame\, the six syllables are whispered. Some include the thigse\, a geometric pattern for laying out the form of a standing or sitting Buddha\, or Bodhisattva\, that I learned from Sanje. \nThe Silent Bell series were prints from a large broken piece of steel that we found under the boiler here at KCC during the remodel: the three bells at the beginning and ending of meditation. This piece of steel now supports a statue of Kuan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) under the maple tree at my home. \nAbout Jef Gunn \nJef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawaii. He is for the most part self-taught\, having begun his training in drawing and painting within the California Junior College system in the early and mid 1970s. He has held two residencies in Europe\, which were deeply influential: fifteen months in Barcelona (1986-87) where he discovered the mediaeval religious icons in the Museo de Arte Catalán\, and Spanish abstract surrealists like Antoni Tàpies and Joan Miró; and seven months at the Cité Internationale des Arts\, (Paris)\, in 1988. His 2005 completion of a formal BFA program at Marylhurst University in Oregon provided a rigorous opportunity for Gunn to continue exploring the ideas and practices that inform his painting. He lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. \n“Painting is nothing less than an inquiry into the relationship between consciousness and the phenomenal world. Looking outside: painting the landscape en plein air is a spontaneous response that occurs somewhere between the sensation on the eye and perception of an object. As such\, it is a way of contemplation of light\, of mind\, of time and the passing moment. In this way\, according to Cézanne\, Claude Monet was “Only an eye\, but my God what an eye!” \nThe activity of mind is different when working in the studio\, where I am managing the means of abstracting and sublimating the original inspiration. Looking inside: the studio processes tend to be more calculated\, poeticized and layered. Sympathetic resonances develop between the spatial shapes and the textures of accident\, between the materials and the patterns of language\, and the possibility to suggest meaning. \nBoth processes are a delight to me. There is insight as well as humor and heartache in each. Both are mind revealing mind.” \nJef Gunn hosts annual painting retreats out at KCC’s Retreat Land\, Ser Chö Ösel Ling. The next one is currently scheduled for early October and registration is open; find out more here.\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/art-presentation-by-jef-gunn/

SUMMARY:Ser Chö Ösel Ling 25th Anniversary Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This year marks a remarkable milestone: 25 years of SCOL and 50 years of KCC. To honor this shared journey\, we’ll gather on the retreat land to celebrate all that has unfolded so far and to look ahead with enthusiasm to the retreats and possibilities yet to come. \nThis gathering will bring together friends\, neighbors\, and long‑time supporters of the retreat center\, many of whom played key roles in its founding\, maintenance\, and growth. The celebration will include a vegetarian lunch offered by SCOL\, opportunities to explore the land\, interest tables\, a history presentation\, information about the dharma and Buddhist retreat\, nature walks\, and activities for children. \nA Brief History of SCOL \nIn 2001\, KCC purchased the land which previously served as a horse ranch and lies on the ancestral lands of the Rock Creek Band of the Klickitat people. At that time\, the 240 acres held a modest two‑bedroom house\, a large barn\, corral fencing beside a heart‑shaped meadow\, a steady creek\, and a recovering forest of pine\, oak\, and fir. Since then\, development of a long‑term retreat center has continued\, including two cloistered retreat wings and several staff buildings. \nOver the years\, SCOL has hosted a one‑year retreat\, a three‑year retreat\, and many shorter retreats and gatherings. Each year we offer guided retreats\, opportunities for personal practice\, and themed weekends and workshops. All the while\, SCOL remains dedicated to nurturing and revitalizing the land so it may support the flora\, fauna\, and all who visit. \nTo learn more about the history of SCOL\, click here. \nStaying for the Weekend \nSangha members are invited to stay Friday night\, Saturday night\, or both. The main activities will be held between 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Saturday. We currently have capacity to host 35 people in cabins. Single cabins will not be available for this event\, only ones with double occupancy. Ample camping spaces will also be available. \nThere is no cost to stay; however\, we warmly encourage you to donate or become a sustaining supporter to help ensure dharma teachings remain available for many years to come! We are looking for volunteers for all aspects of this event. If you would like to volunteer to help\, please select the volunteer option on the registration form. \nBecause parking is limited\, we ask participants to carpool whenever possible. A carpool coordination system has been set up\, and you will receive an email with details after registering. \nPlease register by September 11\, even if you’re only attending on Saturday\, and include the number of people in your group. Even if you do not plan to stay overnight\, we need you to register if you intend to join us for the celebration. As lunch will be provided\, accurate numbers are essential for planning. You will receive additional information upon registration. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n \n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/ser-cho-osel-ling-25th-anniversary-gathering/

SUMMARY:The World is Its Own Magic - A Weekend of Plein Air Painting and Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:This four-day residential weekend workshop offers techniques in outdoor landscape painting in the high desert forest of the eastern Columbia Gorge. \nThe workshop is designed for artists of varying skill levels who have some experience in drawing and composition; knowledge of color theory is helpful. We will explore color\, composition\, and perspective in new and complex ways allowing artists to unlock fresh avenues of expression and deepen their understanding of visual storytelling. \nHosted at SCOL\, near Goldendale\, Washington\, the schedule will include a guided morning meditation led by KCC teacher Kathleen Benz. We will allow ourselves to become still\, reflective and observant\, and from this mindful stillness we will visit our first painting site where Jef will give guidance on viewing the landscape\, seeing space\, and how it might be arranged in a rectangular canvas\, and then how to manage drawing and colors with mind and heart. \nThe tuition includes lodging\, vegetarian meals and guidance in painting and meditation. The SCOL center will provide a cook and facilities staff\, but each student will be asked to complete a daily task of service. \n  \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n  \nArtist Jef Gunn\nA Northwest native\, Jef Gunn studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s and held residencies in Barcelona and Paris in the 1980s. With a balance of humor\, broad knowledge and helpful insight he is able to draw from each student their own natural way to paint\, while bringing to bear practical instruction through contemporary and historical examples. He has been teaching painting\, including landscape outdoors\, for 30 years. Jef has been a part of the KCC Buddhist community since moving to Portland in 1998. He was part of the team that built the retreat facility at SCOL. \nFrom Jef: \n“Over these years of meditation practice and learning Buddhist views on life\, ethics and kindness\, and care for all beings\, I’ve seen a shift in my work as an artist. Sometimes\, I’ve made this explicit in the forms of the work or in the titles\, with both abstract works and landscapes. \nBringing Buddhist awareness and perhaps a Daoist understanding\, life and living systems open before us. A hill is just a hill\, then it’s a metaphor\, then it’s a hill again. It lifts into sky and drifts into valley. River flows to the sea. Cloud flows. Warm colors and cool colors interact. The blues of the sky change as you look higher. The wind blows through you. You mix colors\, looking at the wide world for clues. You’re interacting with this wild inhabited land\, and you’re responding with irascible paints on a palette. \nJust as with following meditation instructions\, you follow a protocol with the palette\, the mixing knife\, the colors\, the canvas\, the impossible view\, its impossible spaciousness. The mind too is impossibly spacious. You can be present for the whole thing. You might even end up with a painting.” \nVisit Jef’s website here: www.jefgunn.com\n\nVIEW EVENT DETAILS: https://kcc.org/event/the-world-is-its-own-magic-a-weekend-of-plein-air-painting-and-mindfulness/
