Benefits Ripple Out to the World
- Very Venerable Kalu Rinpoche,

What makes our work of value to the world? Long retreat supports the cultivation of deep equanimity and empathy for others. Absence of these qualities perpetuates mistreatment of people and the environment. The work of transforming self-interest into concern for the welfare of others is critical to creating enduring peace in our world.
It is common for people in other pursuits-medical doctors, professional athletes, concert musicians-to spend years in training. In order to become truly practiced, it is common for five or ten thousand hours of professional training. Spending time in long retreat is a similar kind of training. Nurturing the qualities of empathy, compassion, and equanimity through intensive practice can bring about the wisdom that is the cause of skillful action in the world.
To preserve this tradition, many people will have to share the vision and support it with their actions and resources. We all must invest something precious. Those who make an investment in this work will not be disappointed. Two decades from now, we think they will say their contribution was multiplied a hundred fold, a thousand fold, in their own lives and in the lives of others.
